Editorial Review Book Description As a complete introduction to the Internet, this book covers thebasic utilities you use to access the network: mail, telnet, ftp,and news readers. But it also does much more. The Guide paysclose attention to several important information servers (Archie,Wais, Gopher) that are, essentially, databases of databases: theyhelp you find what you want among the millions of files and thousandsof archives available. There's also coverage of the World Wide Web. We've also included our own database of databases: a resource indexthat covers a broad selection of several hundred important resources, ranging from the King James Bible to archives for USENET news. So if you use the Internet for work or for pleasure -- or if you'dlike to, but don't know how -- you need this book. If you've been aroundthe Net for a few years, you'll still be able to discover resourcesyou didn't know existed. Also includes a pull-out quick-reference card. Now more comprehensive than ever, here's what you will find in thesecond edition: Customer Reviews (5)
By the author of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Internet" To really take advantage of this book it is best to have a shell account. Then you can go where no browser has gone before.
The best Internet Handbook!
A great book for net-novices who aren't computer-illiterates
Great, but slightly out of date
Too complicated |

Editorial Review Amazon.com This is the book to buy if you have a handle on certain aspects of the Internet experience--e-mail and Web surfing, for example--but want to learn what else the global network has to offer--say, Web banking or mailing-list management. The authors clearly have seen a thing or two online and are able to share their experiences entertainingly and with clarity. However, they commit the mistake of misidentifying an Amazon.com book review as a publisher's synopsis of a book. Aside from that transgression, The Whole Internet presents detailed information on much of the Internet. In most cases, coverage explains what something (online stock trading, free homepage sites, whatever) is all about and then provides you with enough how-to information to let you start exploring on your own. Coverage ranges from the super-basic (how to surf) to the fairly complex (sharing an Internet connection among several home computers on a network). Along the way, readers get insight into buying, selling, meeting, relating, and doing most everything else on the Internet. While other books explain the first steps into the Internet community with more graphics, this one will remain useful to the newcomer long after he or she has become comfortable using the Internet. --David Wall Topics covered: Basic Internet connectivity, Internet software, mailing lists, newsgroups, netiquette, personal information security, shopping, auctions, games, basic Web publishing with HTML, and advanced home connectivity with local area networking. The Whole Internet: The Next Generationa book for a new generation of Internet users. There are more applications, more exciting information, and more problems to deal with, ranging from mere annoyances to outright theft. So we've written a book that illuminates how you can use the Internet effectively in today's environment. We'll explain how to deal with everyday problems like unsolicited email and security alerts. We'll also tell you how to take advantage of new services on the Web. Such services, like those for buying and selling goods, trading stock, and even playing games, have really become applications unto themselves, and deserve the fullest explanation that we can provide. How do you play the new audio files that are all around the net?How do you sell the antique furniture your grandmother left you?How do you prevent others from stealing your credit card information? How do you protect yourself from computer viruses? How do you write and publish your own web pages? How do you use the Internet to cut down your long distance phone bills? You will also find a next generation catalog of Internet resources. It's obviously not an exhaustive list, which could never be assembled in one book. But it's a wide-ranging selection of sites that we found interesting, useful, or just plain fun. We've focused on "meta-sites": that is, sites that provide extensive lists of related resources. We don't need to convince you that the Internet is a valuable resource--whether you're a corporate attorney or a gourmet chef, you already know. But you may not know how to make the Internet work for you.If you need to catch up with the many changes that have taken place in the last few years--if you'd like to try some of the next generation tools that are now available--The Whole Internet: The Next Generation is a book you have to read. Great 'User's Guide' for the 'Net' The authors'conversational (and at times gently humorous) style makes reading about allthese potentially daunting topics very easy. And at times you becomefascinated by all the things you can do on the 'Net, like searching for along-lost friend, paying your bills online, or buying the latest CD fromSteely Dan or the latest Stephen King novel online. There are chapters inthis book about using email (and conquering email problems) and net news, protecting your privacy online, a chapter to building your own web page, what to do when you have trouble getting online, and playing online games(and avoiding "lag" and disconnects). I also loved theResources section near the back of the book, which lists a number ofdifferent web sites for various topics. The book also looks to the futureand what technologies we can look forward to seeing in the next few years. If you want a good overall view of what the current Internet looks like, this is the book for you. I also recommend the Internet In A Nutshellbook. ... Read more |
