In a quiet corner of the stately little city of Wheeling, West Va., stands a monument on which is inscribed:By authority of the State of West Virginia to commemorate the siege of Fort Henry, Sept 11, 1782, the last battle of the American Revolution, this tablet is here placed. Had it not been for the heroism of a girl the foregoing inscription would never have been written, and the city of Wheeling would never have existed. From time to time I have read short stories and magazine articles which have been published about Elizabeth Zane and her famous exploit; but they are unreliable in some particulars, which is owing, no doubt, to the singularly meagre details available in histories of our western border. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Is this an unauthorized printing?
I absolutely loved this book when I read it at 12 years old, at 21 years old and I wanted to read it again and have my own copy. This edition was so full of typing errors that it was distracting.I can't imagine reading this copy having never read the book before.Even having read the story I had to puzzle out the meaning of some phrases or sentences!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tale
I maybe a little biased but I'm a big Zane Grey fan. Despite the corn, this is a great read. It describes frontier life in the 1700's. Full of adventure and family loyalty, this book is simply wonderful. If you're looking for intrigue, introspection or deep meaning don't read Zane Grey, otherwise enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book + answer to Mrs Brown from Florida
I am 15 years old and I too am a descendant of Betty zane. I read this book after I started my research about my family, and after I had discovered that my ancestors had written books about one another. This book is great even for teens !!!

Ps. Mrs. Brown if you read this message could you please leave me an e-mail address or something, because I am trying to contact members of my family, and Idiscovered that you are part of it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
In 1972 my father gave me a copy of this book in his efforts to instill in me the joy of reading. I still have that book and still love reading it after all these years. 31 years later I still enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars West is Best
Zane Gray is a master of the western tale. His books cover the western expansion from the French and Indian wars right down to the 50's.This particular book is more historical than others, but still rich with action and romance. Don't miss out on this and other books by the "King of the West". I have read nearly all of his 30+ books, and find myself master of all the major and minor events the Western expansion. His plots grow slightly repetative (boy meets girl, ect.)but her never sets his stories in the same year or "territory". His best book is "Riders of the Purple Sage". ... Read more

This classic western tail of men saving women, while being a great love story is also a wonderful adventure story.A classic cowboy\borderman fights indian to save the helpless beuty, but instead of man saving woman,it is reversed, when Helen saves Jonathan from his own unhappy life.Ihave loved this book since the first day my mother placed it in my hands toread, and although the original has a few lapses in storyline, they killsomeone twice, the basic story structure is enjoyable.Having read thisbook close to a dozen times, I can recommend that every person who hasnever given westerns a try read this one. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting view of America during World War I
Hero Kurt Dorn is the son of a German immigrant, which puts father and son at odds during the war. Most of the book is taken up with Dorn's fight against the I.W.W., a socialist labor force that's backed by German money. (A double whammy as the two things America hated most at this time was Germany AND socialists!) It's not until the last third or so of the book that Kurt goes off to war. Author Zane Grey, through his fictional character, is able to go off on a tangent about American women going ga-ga over a uniform and throwing themselves at men. (Like that's never happened before.) Once in the trenches of France, Dorn - who had been so anxious to go kill Germans - suddenly realizes the evils of war and the wrongness of wholesale slaughter. Not that that stops him from killing a few Germans anyway.

Count how many times the word "wheat" is used in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic Western tale
Zane Grey's The Desert Of Wheat is the powerful story of Kurt Dorn, a young farmer facing a moral dilemma between going to France to fight the Germans or staying in America to protect the woman he loves and his wheat crop grown with the sweat of hard labor. A classic Western tale, epitomizing Zane Grey's undeniable ability to capture the soul of life, love, and land, and vividly narrated by Jim Gough, The Desert Of Wheat is a superbly produced, complete and unabridged audiobook presentation and highly recommended for community library audiobook collections and the legions of dedicated Zane Grey fans. ... John Shefford studied for the ministry in Beaumont, Illinois, but traveled west to the Utah-Arizona border where the red desert valley between the jagged line of black mesa and yellow range included a wild canyon that held a troubling secret. Shefford's fiance, Fay Larkin, was imprisoned in this undiscovered canyon with two others who had fled harassment from the Mormons. The mystery of this place was hidden in an unnamed village of "sealed" wives. The road to the village was blocked by a formidable crew of murderous half-breeds whose punishment for trespassing was death. Shefford learned of this place from Venters, a man he knew in Beaumont, who had lived in that beautiful hidden valley whose location was unknown and the entrance to it closed forever when a rock balanced above the entry was sent crashing down purposely, calamitously loosening the precarious walls underneath. Now Shefford's dangerous attempt to rescue Fay is no easy accomplishment for someone who knew his efforts might end in a savage massacre. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Four Corners fiction
I wouldn't have liked this book as much if I didn't live in Kayenta. It is the author's description of Red Lake, Kayenta, and Tsegi among others that makes this book so interesting. My Doctor told me about it, I bought it and have been passing it around to other people in town. Sorry Amazon. Sometimes the story drags a bit but that is Zane Grey. Sometimes his treatement of the Navajo is a bit stereotyped. Come to the four corners, stay awhile. Hike among the canyons and mesas. Get to know the people. Than read the book. You'll get much more out of it. There's an isolated cliff dwelling out here (somewhere near Tsegi Canyon, no more hints) where Zane Grey carved his name into the sandstone. He writes a pretty good description of the area and its people. ... Read more

Book Description

The Last Trail is the third and final novel in Zane Grey’s Ohio River Valley trilogy. In many ways, this concluding volume of the saga is one of perpetuation. The wilderness along the Ohio has been rapidly disappearing. Forests have been replaced by farms. Woodsmen, hunters, and frontiersmen are becoming farmers. This is true, in fact, for almost everyone except that strange and wonderful character, the border Nemesis, the “mysterious, shadowy, elusive man, whom few pioneers ever saw, but of whom all knew,” Lew Wetzel.

Known by the Indians as le vent de la mort (the wind of death), Wetzel and his partner Jonathan Zane are hard on the trail of white rustlers led by Simon Girty and Bing Leggitt. One night at their campfire Helen Sheppard and her father, who have become lost in the forest on their way to Fort Henry, are approached by Wetzel and Zane. For Jonathan Zane and Helen Sheppard this accidental encounter is the beginning of a romance that will be fraught with many dangers. Betty Zane, whose dash for gunpowder in the defense of Fort Henry during the Revolutionary War is now legendary, and her brother, Colonel Ebenezer Zane, are also among the characters in The Last Trail, older now, sharing their wisdom and experiences with a younger generation.

The Last Trail was first published in 1909. Two years before, Zane Grey had taken his first journey to the Far West, and it would be in the regions west of the Mississippi that his subsequent Western romances would be set. Yet his frontier trilogy made secure his reputation as a historical novelist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Western Action Delivered By A Genre Master
Zane Grey delivers a fantastic read full of archatypical Texas characters. The prose is a little dated, but hey, it is a period tale by a vintage western master. If you like stories about the Texas Rangers you'll really enjoy this book. The plot has Rangers, rustlers and two beautiful women new to the Texas Country. All of these elements combine with a secret Ranger mission to the Big Bend badlands, an area notorious for the roughest, meanest hombres in the Old West. Pick this one up to see how Grey uses his unique prose, scenic locations and numerous -- sometimes predictable but never dull -- plot twists to tell this action-packed western.

4-0 out of 5 stars Writing with a Moral
This book is excellent!Unlike many "pulp" novels today, Grey uses an extensive vocabulary and makes the reader "read."With his mastery of English, his descriptions of human emotions draws you into the mind of Russ (the main character). This book should be required readingof young people, especially young men.The strong moral codes presented init are inspirational and timeless. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Zane Grey's The Westerners
The Westerners is a series of short stories. The heroes and heroines have a love for all things "west" and Zane Grey is eloquent in his descriptions of the places, geography and scenes surrounding his characters. The tone is "romantic" and personal, including some Zane Grey experiences in exploringand being in the Southwest himself. For an "up" experience of the romance of the West, you can't beat Zane Grey's The Westerners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Zane Grey Short Stories
The title of the book is the first problem, as only some of the stories are westerns. The first story, The Ranger, is fun to read. The actual story which shares the name of the book has almost nothing to do with anything western. I found it very boring and could not wait to finish it. The problem is that it takes up a good portion of the book. The last couple of stories are about whales and fishermen in Australia. One of them was written by Loren Grey, the daughter of Zane. These stories are actually the most interesting parts of the book and for me they made the book worth reading. I recommend you take a copy and read the first and last two stories. Unless you have nothing better to do, leave off the others in between. ... Read more
