Book Description
He had not gone far when he found himself on a wide moor. He sat down on a big stone, and began to turn things over in his mind. This is how his thoughts went: "I can never be the man I was! The thoucht o' my heart 's ta'en frae me! I canna think aboot things as I used. There's naething sae bonny as afore.Download Description
It was a lovely morning in the first of summer.Donal Grant was descending a path on a hillside to the valley below - a sheep-track of which he knew every winding as well as any boy his half-mile to and from school. But he had never before gone down the hill with the feeling that he was not about to go up again. He was on his way to pastures very new, and in the distance only negatively inviting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite.
. . . seems to be my favorite. Has a lot of different sermonettes thatappeal to me, and truth that has satisfied me when I was searching fortruth hungrily.I remember the last chapter particularly. There are somebeautiful pictures in this book--I guess you could call it"mystical".In the "scary" parts, I remember Donal'scourage; and I admire Donal's boldness in various situations throughout thebook.Donal wasn't afraid to respectfully disagree with others ondoctrine. This story is vivid in my mind and I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Book of Pure Wisdom and Intrigue.
I have just finished this book and I do think it is my favorite one by this author. Be prepared, because it is some 800 pages long, but you are never disappointed either with the story line or the author's spiritualasides which read almost like a devotional. The main thrust of the story isabout a young tutor named Donal Grant who leaves home after finishingcollege and sets out on foot to make his way in the world to a nearbycoastal town in Northeastern Scotland. He meets a shoemaker who becomes hisspiritual mentor, and finds employment and lodging in the nearby castle. Asthe story progresses we meet a reclusive, drug addicted uncle, hisbeautiful but spiritually dull niece, and his spoiled and brash son who isup to all kinds of naughty flirting with the shoemaker's daughter.

Themost appealing part of this novel is the element of the supernatural whichMr. MacDonald brings in. There are ghost noises, somnabulisms, secret roomsand passages, murder, scandal, and ghost stories and legends. Ghosts toGeorge MacDonald represent part of the vast region of the Spirit whichexists beside and beyond our own, and he never posits their accualexistence. They are never a source of evil power or fear because all thingsexist by the power and will of God.

Get this book, it is well worth thevery low price. There are parts (perhaps 15%) which are written in Scotchdialect, but it makes the book that much more interesting that you have touse your brain a little to recognize what is being said. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This uniquely interdisciplinary collection of essays derives in part from a two-day international conference held at Heriot-Watt University in November 1999 and conceived as a critical forum for the discussion of the concept of interaction. The collection satisfies a continuing need for interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research in the humanities and stems from an awareness of the growing currency of interactionist theories in several fields and the need to make a critical contribution to such theories and related concepts such as intersubjectivity and dialogism. Rather than advancing an apologetic view of interaction as something given, the contributors carefully consider and challenge commonly held epistemological and theoretical assumptions relating to the interaction concept. Interaction, if it is to be a meaningful concept, must be seen in terms of its modes (e.g. linguistic, media-based), units (language, logic, communication), objectives (understanding, consensus, stability) and fields of operation (face-to-face interaction, translation, social codification). This collection is intended to offer a provisional response to the question posed by one of its contributors, `What does it meantoday that communication as the mechanism of social co-ordination has itself be come complex?'. It means that erstwhile certainties of meaning transmission, stability, duality or dichotomy, identity and difference can be challenged and theoretically modelled in new contexts. Interdisciplinarity is one means by which to illuminate this complexity from several sides in the pursuit of theoretical blind spots in the field of critical communication studies. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and students in communication theory, linguistics, translation studies, logic, social psychology, discourse studies, European Studies, philosophy and semiotics. ...
