Farmer Brown's boy, up in the tree by the nest of Hooty the Owl in the lonesome corner of the Green Forest, was fighting a battle. No, he wasn't fighting with Hooty or Mrs. Hooty. He was fighting a battle right inside himself. It was a battle between right and wrong. Once upon a time he had taken great delight in collecting the eggs of birds, in trying to see how many kinds he could get. Then as he had come to know the little forest and meadow people better, he had seen that taking the eggs of birds is very, very wrong, and he had stopped stealing them. He bad declared that never again would he steal an egg from a bird. ... Read more

Just then there was a sharp hiss, a very fierce hiss. Johnny Chuck felt the hair on his neck rise as it always did when he heard that hiss, and he wasn't at all surprised, when he turned his head, to find Mr. Blacksnake close by. Mr. Blacksnake glided swiftly up to the old log and coiled himself in front of the opening. Then he raised his head and ran out his tongue in the most impudent way. ... Read more

The beloved Johnny Chuck experiences many trials throughout the book, one of which is a yearning to roam from his home. However, he faces all of his problems with a cool head. Some of his tribulations include an annoyingnuisance in the form of Sammy Jay, and a mystery animal that provokes ourhero.

Peter Rabbit had lost his appetite. Now when Peter Rabbit loses his appetite, something is very wrong indeed with him. Peter has boasted that he can eat any time and all the time. In fact, the two things that Peter thinks most about are his stomach and satisfying his curiosity, and nearly all of the scrapes that Peter has gotten into have been because of those two things. ... When he left home to go to the Old Pasture, in the hope that he would be able to find something to eat there, he started off bravely. It was cold, very cold indeed, but his fur coat kept him warm as long as he was moving. The Green Meadows were glistening white with snow. All the world, at least all that part of it with which Reddy was acquainted, was white. It was beautiful, very beautiful, as millions of sparkles flashed in the sun. But Reddy had no thought for beauty; the only thought he had room for was to get something to put in the empty stomachs of himself and Granny Fox. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the young reader too
I chose this book to use for reading instruction. The print is big and bold.Just the right number of words per page for a child starting chapter books. The book is easily decodable, with a very few sophosticated (but still decodable)words sprinkled in like undignified, contentment, conceit, to advance a childs vocabulary. Most important though, the story is really very entertaining. The reader quickly finds himself sympathizing with the poor hungry foxes.Granny has lots of important lessons to teach the younger fox about just how smart elders can be. A true delight.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent animal story read aloud for bedtime.
A 1920 copyright book (with a few illustrations by Harrison Cady) presents charmingly told stories by a master storyteller.Reddy Fox learns many lessons in life from his Granny.Greed, humility, patience, selflessness, and other virtues and vices are revealed in timeless tales of the animalsthat inhabit the Green Meadow and Green Forest. There are 29 chapters, each about 6-7 pages long, in the Grosset & Dunlap edition.Eachchapter begins with a short insightful poem. This is a good book to readto a 4-9 year old at bedtime. The pace of its stories are suitable forbeing read overseveral nights with chapters building upon prior events. As Granny Fox says, "It's what you do for others, Not what they do foryou, That makes you feel so happy All through and through andthrough." - Cedric Richeson ... But he didn't, and so when he thought he was safe, he stopped. Now in flying away from the hunter he had followed the Laughing Brook where it winds through a sort of swamp before it joins the Big River. Because there was more water than could be kept between the banks of the Big River, it had crept over the banks, and all the trees of the swamp were standing in water. Just beyond where Sammy was sitting was a pile of brush in the water. A Jolly Little Sunbeam, dancing down through the tree tops, touched something under the edge of the brush, and Sammy's sharp eyes caught a flash of green. Idly he watched it, and presently it moved. Instantly Sammy was all curiosity. He flew over where he could see better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blat
This book is wonderful. It is completely told from the duck's point of view, which coincedently (surprisingly) is thick with anti-huntingsentiments.Nearly every page has one reference or another to howhearltless, cruel, unfair, etc that hunters are.Whether you agree withthis sentiment or not, the blatant one sideness of the story makes this avery amusing book (I first read this when I was 7, now I'm 21 and I stilllove it, as a child I loved the plot and the characters, as an adult I lovehow Burgess is able to convey his beliefs and naturalist knowledge into achildren's story) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Beatrix Potter
Reading these books was fun for me as a child but I never enjoyed them as much as Beatrix Potter. The english author wrote in a more mature, fairy tale style that children could still relate to while these books have moreof a folk tale background. However, some of Burgesses books are better thanthis one and I urge you to read Reddy Fox instead of Mr Toad.

Happy Jack Squirrel sat on the tip of one of the highest branches of a big hickory tree. Happy Jack was up very early that morning. In fact, jolly, round, red Mr. Sun was still in his bed behind the Purple Hills when Happy Jack hopped briskly out of bed. He washed himself thoroughly and was ready for business by the time Mr. Sun began his climb up in the blue, blue sky. You see, Happy Jack had found that big hickory tree just loaded with nuts all ripe and ready to gather. He was quite sure that no one else had found that special tree, and he wanted to get all the nuts before any one else found out about them. So he was all ready and off he raced to the big tree just as soon as it was light enough to see. ... Read more

Sammy Jay brushed and smoothed out his handsome blue coat and made himself as pert and smart-appearing as possible. He had been so worried lately that he hadn't taken much care of himself, which is very unusual for Sammy Jay. Now, however, he felt so much better that he began to think about his looks. When he had finished dressing, he started for the alders beside the Laughing Brook just to have a look around. Of course he didn't expect to find his voice down there, for who ever saw a voice? Still he thought that he might find something that would explain the mystery. ... Read more

I'd love to know what book "Super Tim" read, as nowhere in this book did ANYONE say "Wow, there goes Mr. Mocky".In fact, this is a very good book which we've had for about 2 weeks and my 4 year old has had me read repeatedly. We cover about 3 chapters a night at bedtime. It teaches that playing tricks on your friends is NOT the way to keep them, and can actually cause people a lot of trouble.I highly recommend it - along with all of the other Thornton Burgess books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Wow...that sums up my reacation to the 'Adventures Of Mr. Mocker'.The book is a collection of the various exploits of the main character, an inspirational Mr. Mocker.Throughout the book Mr. Mocker, we'll call him "Mocky", trouces here and there with escapade after escapede, only to land himself in more schemes as his friends and enemies alikeexclaim "There goes Mocky on another one of his grand ventures!" What I liked most about this book was that the title left so much to theimagination.Mocky could be doing anything throughout the book, for oneman's nap is another man's adventure!

Even though I have never read thisbook, I whole heartedly encourage everyone to do so.Reading this bookwill provide you with (depending on your reading speed) hours of escapefrom your ho-hum life, as you gleefully tag along on Mocky's Adventures!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Mocker is about a mocking bird who came from the south
I liked this book third best because the book is about the mystery of the mocking bird and now I am going to tell you what I mean.Well the story is about two little green forest people and a mocking bird. And near the end of the book it becomes about all of the little people in the green forest and the green meadows. And if you want to know, those two little green forest people are Sammy Jay and Sticky Toes the tree toad, who people say were talking in the night when they were really sound asleep. But soon everyone found out it was the Mocking Bird that was making all the noise in the night. And at the end they had a little party and everything turned out fine. 5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful memoir
This delightful memoir of a very popular Depression-era children's author, Thornton Burgess, heightened my appreciation for the work he and illustrator, Harrison Cady did so profusely for thirty years. The author's personal insights into the human-ness of the family adds credibility and sensitivity to the book.Personal photos enhanced the read, appearing to be candids from family albums. Thanks, Mrs. Meigs, for reminding us of your grandfather's appreciation for the wonders of nature, and it's connection to divine creation. ... Read more
