3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Companion to the DVD's (for babies)
Like any typical board book, this Boz book is short, colorful, and quick to read.Boz shares cookies and toys, then talks briefly about how God made the world to share with us and enjoy. It closes with Boz "sharing" a great big hug and saying, "Wherever you are...near or far....God loves you, and I do too," just like in the Boz videos.

My 2 year old daughter likes the colorful pictures, but I usually have to draw the story out by elaborating on what's going on in the pictures. There isn't enough text or story on each page to keep her interested unless I add to it.But, she's 2.I think if she were around still a baby the book would be perfect, but she's growing up and wants stories with more meat to them.Nevertheless, she drags this book around and asks us to read Boz.

My only advice to parents is to add a DVD to the book, or else kids won't know who Boz is or what's going on, and they will probably toss the book aside for a character they know---like Mickey Mouse or Elmo.Buy a DVD first, then add on the extra Boz "stuff".Enjoy! ... Read more

Book Description
Dickens is considered to be one of the greatest writers. He was a social activist who wrote plays and novels during the Victorian period. This collection of humorous sketches was first published in the Morning Chronicle under the pen name Boz. Sections include Our Parish, Through and About People, Scenes, and Tales.Download Description
We commenced our last chapter with the beadle of our parish, because we are deeply sensible of the importance and dignity of his office. We will begin the present, with the clergyman. Our curate is a young gentleman of such prepossessing appearance, and fascinating manners, that within one month after his first appearance in the parish, half the young-lady inhabitants were melancholy with religion, and the other half, desponding with love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars See the evolving genius of Charles Dickens emerge in his Sketches by Boz
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is the greatest English novelist. We all know and love his novels. However, most readers do not read "Sketches by Boz" which is an early compilation of articles the budding author penned for various newspapers and journals. These sketches were written while Dickens was a parliamentary reporter in his early 20s.
Wnence does the name "Boz" derive? As a young lad Dickens gave his younger brother Augustus the nickname "Moses" in honor of a character in Oliver Goldsmith;'s classic novel "The Vicar of Wakefield." Young Augustus could not pronounce "Moses" correctly calling himself "Boz". Dickens decided this would be a good name to apply to himself as he submitted the anonymous humorous sketches he produced in profusion in the 1830s. We sometimes foget that Dickens was already an author prior to the ascension of Queen Victoria in 1837.
The Penguin edition divides the lengthy sketches into four sections:
"Sketches from our Parish:; :Scenes of London"; "Characters" and the best section "Tales" which are humorous short stories.
The book is illustrated by George Cruikshank a good friend of the author and along with Phiz one of Dickens best illustrators.
The various tales are of uneven quality. Do not read this book if you are seeking the complexity of a "Bleak House": "Little Dorrit" or "Our Mutual Friend." Do peruse them if you enjoy succinctly and well observed tales and sketches of what it was like to live in London in the 1830s as the city was becoming a vast metropolis filled with interesting characters. I loved Dickens sketches of what a London street scene was like in the bustle of early morning. His stories of life in the theatre were excellent as was his tour of Newgate prison .
If you have not read Dickens I suggest you begin with "The Pickwick Papers" and this apprentice work. Once you enter the magical, dangerous, hilarious wonderful world of Charles Dickens you will apply for citizenship papers in Mr. Dickens literary universe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sketches by Boz [Penguin Classics edition]
In bookstores and libraries, literary classics are a dime a dozen. There are so many different editions available of each that the problem becomes one not of finding a good read but of selecting the edition of it that's right for you.Charles Dickens is perhaps the most popular of the past masters. All his books are enormously entertaining, whether he's writing about the tragedies of this world or its travesties. His eye for the ludicrous is faultless; his representation of it in print is perfection. He never fails to paint on the canvass in our mind, with a few simple strokes, a comic character that resembles someone we've met somewhere, sometime in our lives. His characters are so real that he needs to do nothing more than describe their appearance briefly and then let them speak for themselves. They speak with all the dignity and importance we all feel in ourselves, yet they unwittingly disclose for the reader all the foibles we all possess ... and mistakenly think known only to ourselves.Likewise, when introducing tragic characters, Dickens prefers to offer brief but unerringly accurate descriptions of their build, demeanor, and dress, and then allow their own words and actions to speak for themselves. His creations elicit mirth and misery in us without fail as Dickens masterfully plucks the strings of our hearts.

Unlike most writers, Dickens is equally at home in both the short story and the full-length novel format. This is because his novels were serialized in periodicals in their first publications.Only later were they edited for book form."Sketches by Boz" is an offering of Dickens's first attempts at writing for a living. It consists of 56 passages, most of which can be read in a single sitting of less than half an hour. These are divided into four sections: "Our Parish", "Scenes", "Characters", and "Tales".Of these, only the last contains fiction. The 44 nonfiction accounts are just as entertaining as their made-up brothers. In fact, I found them even more fun to read at times.Dickens only thinly disguised the identities of his victims while lampooning them, and as editor Dennis Walder so rightly points out, many of these descriptions would surely result in lawsuits for libel if they were published about public figures today.

This was my first experience reading a Penguin Classics edition of Dickens, and I was extremely pleased with it.The editor introduced "Sketches" with a few notes of academic and historical interest, a particular one of which I found to be of great interest as it finally answered a question I'd had for half my life: namely, where Dickens had acquired his nickname of Boz.But more important for today's reader of Dickens is the "Notes" section at the back of the book in which Mr. Walder defines Dickensian slang and explains the author's references to people, events, and places of early nineteenth century London.Much of Dickens's wit is lost on today's reader without such disclosures.

One of my favorite ways of reading a classic author is to collect all of his or her works and then read through them at a leisurely pace in the order they were written.I did this with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with the intention of noting how his style developed over the years.I was surprised to find an unexpected benefit of that project: I was transported to those times and felt as I imagine one of Doyle's contemporary fans must have felt as he read each new Sherlock Holmes story. After finishing Doyle, I immediately began collecting Dickens for a similar project."Sketches by Boz", being a collection of Dickens's first literary efforts, was of course the first in this series. The second Dickens book is "The Pickwick Papers", of which I have the Library of the Future edition. But after reading the Penguin Classics "Sketches", I'm determined to first replace "Pickwick" with the Penguin edition. The Penguin books are reasonably priced and well worth every penny. ... Book Description

When TLC was between albums, I had no way to release my creativity. One night, feeling put-out by my boyfriend and wondering about how much women had to go through to make a relationship work, I sat down and started writing poems. "Unpretty" was the first. Up until then, I hadn't realized how badly I needed to release what I was feeling inside. They were my thoughts from the heart, and my art.

The poems cover a whole range of topics: Love, relationships, heartbreak, body image, family, society, abortion, and many other things. They each mean alot to me, and I hope they inspire you, give you a different perspective on what's going on around you, or just help you relax. You'll find a little bit of me in these words, and maybe you'll find a little bit of yourself or someone you know.

I reached out to my friends, including my fans, while I was putting Thoughts. together and they realty inspired me and helped me figure out which stories to tell. Stories about the important people in my life, like my mom who's always been there for me, my family, my TLC partners Lisa and Rozonda, and those who have all helped me along the way. I've had to deal with some tough stuff, like my relationship with my dad, who left when I was three, my never-ending battle with sickle cell, the bad high school years, my self-image problems, and my fight to survive in this crazy music business.

Sharing these stories and poems has helped me face big issues in my life. Maybe they'll help you, too. Or maybe they'll give you a better understanding of who I am as a person. I can only express myself so much through my songs. On my own, though, I can let you into my heart and mind.

Thank you for allowing me to share my Thoughts with you.

Love, Tionne ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY SELF ABSORBED
THIS BOOK IS ABOUT BRIAN BOSWORTH FORMER NFL PLAYER. THE BOZ TELLS US OF HIS GREATNESS THROUGH OUT THIS EGO TRIP BOOK. THE ONLY INTERESTING PARTS I FOUND, (AND THERE AREN'T TOO MANY) WAS WHEN THE BOZ WAS TELLING US ABOUT SOMEONE OTHER THAN HIM. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK TO TEACH KIDS HOW TO BE A SELF IMPORTANT, AROGANT, BRAGGERT AND BE TOTALLY FULL OF THEMSELVES AND OTHER THINGS. HE TAUGHT ME THAT HAVING A STUPID HAIRCUT, WEARING EARRINGS, GETTING DRUNK AND MAKING AN A--H---E OF HIMSELF IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A HUMAN BEING CAN DO. A TOTAL PIECE OF GARBAGE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ever!!!
Is the Boz the best person to ever live? Without question.

How about the book? Well, I have read every book that's ever been written and this, bar none, is the best.

Support the Boz and buy 8 copies. And what a haircut!

5-0 out of 5 stars The first white hip-hop athlete?
Gotta give five stars, as the book is very entertaining and even insightful regarding football -- the sport, the business, the politics.Boz lets it all hang out, for better and worse.Boz headslaps and quickly sidesteps typical jockspeak. His openness is refreshing!(The only sports book I recall in this vein is Jack Tatum's).I wondered how much of the words' brisk flavor is from the Sports Illustrated writer, and how much comes directly/ unedited from the Boz.Regardless, Boz has tales to tell.He talks trash, but also exposes himself more than anyone -- let it all hang out.

I can see why the (then 23 year old) Boz was either loved or hated.A few tales/opinions are a bit cringe inducing.Boz sometimes (in his words) took things too far.And sometimes he blazed new territory and made folks nervous. When Boz found himself in trouble for going too far (or too new), he seemed surprised or offended that people backed away and let him fall. When Boz wore a t-shirt "NCAA: National Communists Against Athletes," Coach Switzer told Boz not to return for a senior season.Boz notes that his notoriety and skills did much ($$$) for U. of Oklahoma. But when things got *too* notorious -- Boz saw proverbial hands thrown up in the air.He was dropped. Then Boz blazed new ground in the NFL draft, leveraging which teams he would and would not play for; the NFL suits were ruffled. So when Boz had lots of product ready for sale branded "Blue 44," the commisioner enforced the rule that linebackers must have a number between #50 - 70.Passive aggresive payback from the suits?Or, you can't get everything your way?It seems sometimes in college and the pros, Boz felt he gave a lot and was let down.In shorthand, I guess, that's business.

Bottom line:Boz generated big excitement. And most of the controversy he (and/or the media) created was "clean" -- hard hits, talk, style, fresh smarts. Not bad for a 23 year old.In hindsight, it seems Boz had hip-hop style, punk-rock attitude, and a (earned one year early) business degree. This makes for a very interesting voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars the truth hurts, and Bos is the one hurting you with it
The Boz is awsome.
his book, is awsome.

Confessions of a Modern Anti-Hero read like that of an Oliver Stone movie. you don't really want to know the truth cause your afraid at what might happen, but like Stone, Bosworth speaks his mind.

the story of the Boz goes from his high school days to his glory days at OU. Boz tells everything about his college playing days at OU, including his relationship with Barry Switzer.

Brian mentions the steriod incedent and how he felt the NCAA used him as an example. Brian speaks of how the NCAA "prostetutes" it's players because the players bring in money for the school and the program, but the player gets no money for himself. classic example of the pimping business.

Brian also speaks of his rookie season with the seahawks, he tells of his hatred for the golden boy of Denver, John Elway, and his hatred of Pete Rozzell.

Brian's hatred of Rozzell stems from the use of the #44 jersey. Brian wore that number since he was little, and now, the NFL told him that he couldn't use it in the NFL, even though other players had done it. from then on, it was the beginning of a "beautiful" relationship between the two.

and Brian doesn't have boundries in the book. he talks of drug use among other players, alcohol, women, football, the NCAA, John Elway, Switzer, etc.

and the one thing that people never understood was, that Brian was actually a good guy, despite his arogant, Terminator like look.

he had a 3.0 GPA, finished a year early if i'm not mistaken, never used drugs, and wasn't exactly a player. the drugs/steriods issue is covered nicely in the book. he was a man who had respect for himself, and took care of himself.

sadly, his career was cut short, but the image of the Boz lives forever. the clean cut kid from Oklahoma who would turn out to be an All-American LB for the OU and became a modern anti-hero speaks his mind in Brian Bosworth: Confessions of a Modern Anti-hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this Sooner!!
I only recently discovered this book and could not put it down.I have a lot of respect for Brian Bosworth. He is defenitely a man who speaks his mind. The book explains how his father groomed him early on to be someone great and to never quit. There are stories of recruitment tactics and college parties and so on.A great book for any Sooner fan or Bosworth fan like myself.GO BOZ!! ...
