Extractions: WOMEN FROM CANADA'S PAST All the following women are featured in Her Story: Women from Canada's Past. MARIE JACQUELIN DE LA TOUR (1602 - 1645) When Marie married Charles La Tour in 1640, she was swept up into a French civil war over the control of Acadia in the New World. She returned to France to plead her husband's case in court, then defied the King of France and rejoined her husband in Acadia with ships she obtained in Boston. In 1645, Marie valiantly but unsuccessfully defended Fort La Tour from enemy attack. She mysteriously died in enemy hands three weeks later. Suggested reading: THANADELTHUR (1697 - 1717) A member of the Chipewyan First Nation, Thanadelthur was captured by the Crees and forced into slavery as a young woman. She escaped from the Crees and made her way to York Factory, a Hudson's Bay trading post. On behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company she made a long and dangerous journey through the "Barren Lands" and negotiated a peace treaty between the Chipewyans and the Cree. After the sudden death of this courageous and intelligent woman, the Hudson's Bay post governor wrote "I am almost ready to break my heart." Suggested reading: Merritt, Susan E. Werner Family Maria Werner (18221868) m. Isaac Shore (1820-1864) Jacob Friedrich Werner (c1824-?),probably died Young Leanna Elvira 1859-?) Martha V. Warner (ca. 1868-?). http://www.fmoran.com/werner.html
Extractions: Johann Adam Werner was born before 1707 in Germany. He married Maria Catharina Sigler in Germany, and their older children's births are recorded in the Evangelische Kirchbuch of Massenbach, Schwaigern, Wuerttemburg, Germany. They immigrated in September, 1732, on the Johnson of London. Children of Johann Adam and Catharina Werner Note: some of their descendants adopted the spelling VARNER, others remained WERNER or WARNER. In the third and subsequent generations we have used what appears to be the prevalent spelling for each family. Maria Elisabeta Werner (b. 1726, died young)
Flynt Family Sarah Elizabeth Rierson (1859?) Mary Flynt (1855-?) m. John Young John Flynt of RichardS. Flynt and Malinda Walker Martha A. Flynt 1868-?) Minnie V. Flynt (ca http://www.fmoran.com/flynt.html
Extractions: The Flynt family of Stokes and Forsyth Counties traces its ancestry to the 16th century in Ayton , Berwickshire, Scotland. The immigrant ancestor was probably a Richard Flynt, who was in Lancaster Co. VA by about 1640. We have found discrepancies and inconsistencies in the accounts of the Virginia family, no doubt at least partly attributable to the repeated use of Richard and John as given names, with some resulting confusions. Can anyone provide us with a definitive, well-documented history? We begin our account with the Richard Flynt who came to Surry/Stokes Co. NC about 1786, and died about 1792. His birthdate is sometimes given as 1720, sometimes as 1733; the latter date would preclude his being the father of the oldest of his presumptive children. Richard's wife's name was Ann, but was she Ann Perry, daughter of John Perry and Susanna Stanford of Westmoreland Co. VA? Or Ann Fountain? Or both? If Richard is really the father of children whose birthdates range from 1748 to 1780, as reported in some histories, then there were probably two wives, as this child-bearing span is very long for one woman. We are listing the possible children here with two mothers, but we would like confirmation or correction of this assumption. Children of Richard Flynt and Ann Perry (?)
Extractions: The female publicly hanged 1800 - 1868. With special thanks to Dennis Baker for providing the data. Between January 1800 and April 1868 in the British Isles (including Southern Ireland and the Isle of Man), at least 207 women and girls were taken to places of public execution and there hanged by their necks until they were dead, in accordance with the sentence of the court. From the 29th of May 1868 all executions were carried out inside prisons and a further 40 women were hanged in private in the British Isles (including Southern Ireland up to 1925). Ruth Ellis became the last woman to suffer the death penalty in Britain in 1955. 22 of these hangings were carried out in the 19th century and 18 in the 20th century.
