Extractions: Foxhunting is under serious attack in Britain, and this official British government site details the status of the inquiry into whether it should be banned. Take note of it. Unfortunately, fads and frenzies so while this applies only to Britain, there is always the danger of it spreading to other places. The official inquiry has been completed, so this site is no longer accepting input, but it's still worth looking at to get an accurate report on the actual status, since much of the information available in the media has been slanted. Extractions: Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Aristotle University, 54006 Thessaloniki, Greece. Abstract Greek antiquity and the welfare of animals The position of animals in antiquity (art, religion and mythology) From prehistoric times the domesticated animal was the main element of a Greek's wealth and a valuable helper. His first means of barter was the animal and his notion of worth was expressed in head of livestock. In the archaic period, man co-existed with animals; he tended them, exploited them and certain of them he worshipped. The animals, for their part, not only provided food for man but stimulated his ideas and he, observing them, philosophised. It is worth mentioning here that many researchers consider that sentient man's second cultural act, after the discovery of fire, was domesticating the dog since with the protection it gave him, he could rest, carefree, to study nature and turn his thoughts to medication. The development of stock farming and substantial production of farmed products is important evidence of the special care and attention given to breeding and raising animals as well as to the preservation of their health in the early Greek period (2800-1100 BC). The well-known feat of Hercules clearing manure from the Augean stables in a single day by channelling the waters of the rivers Alpheus and Pineius through them is nothing if not important witness of this development in animal husbandry on the one hand and on the other the attention given to the preventative hygiene of animals and thus to their welfare, protecting human health at the same time.

The Gardens Of The Great Kings From Cyrus To Alexander The earliest historical records about the Achaemenian paradise are thoseof the Greek author Xenophon (ca 431355 BC), a disciple of Socrates. http://www.rozanehmagazine.com/julyaugust02/Mayjune02new/persiangardenma.html
Extractions: An early-nineteenth century map of the Persian Empire at the time of Darius the Great, the third of the Achaemenian King of Kings (522-486 B.C.) This map also shows the twenty-two satrapie of the empire, each of which contained a royal garden. The Achaemenian spear established Persia's empire, an empire that covered nearly two million square miles and absorbed nations from Libya to India and from Greece to Ethiopia. The Achaemenian government united the disparate peoples under a single rule, leaving them their cultures and their gods, tying them together through far-reaching chains of communication and sophisticated administration. The Achaemenian genius, it seems, was for synthesis, in governing as in the arts of civilization. Thus the imperial culture that Cyrus and his descendants created was a rich tapestry of many colors: Entirely new, it was woven from threads as old as civilization itself. Achaemenian palaces derived their style from those of subject peoples. Assyrians, Egyptians, Babylonians, and Greeks, among others, built those soaring royal halls, and all the peoples of the empire brought as tribute the objects that adorned the buildings and their great gardens.
