Indeed, many observations of this kind have been recorded The following are examples The Chinese poet Lo-tien (773-846) mentioned viewing stones (see www.bonsai-nbf.org/); "Japanese paintings and block prints of the 12 th through the 15 th centuries depict many suiseki" ( ibidem) ; Shakespeare (1564-1616) has Hamlet exclaiming about cloud shapes that resemble "a camel," "a weasel," and "a whale" ( Hamlet Act iii, scene 2); Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910)] in The Diaries of Adam and Eve has Adam lamenting " always that same pretext is offered it looks like the thing."; [and] Robert Williams Wood (1868-1955) in his little book How to tell the birds from the flowers (1917) provides some delightful sketches and poetic remarks that pertain to such observations. BARNES , Djuna (1892-1982) An American novelist, dramatist, poet, short-story writer and artist, Barnes was an integral member of the young set in 1920s Paristhe so-called "Lost Generation." She was also, in those years, a close friend (briefly a lover) of NCB. Many critics considered Barnes the most talented American writer of her time, a "female James Joyce." Nightwood (1936), based on the story of her painful love affair with sculptor Thelma Wood, is generally acknowledged as her masterpiece. The central character of her somewhat Rabelaisian farce, Ladies Almanack (1928), is modeled on Natalie.
