Extractions: WOOD, MRS HENRYWOOD, SIR H. EVELYN He is described as " a very strong lusty man, " of uncouth manners and appearance, not so deaf as he pretended, of reserved and temperate habits, not avaricious and a despiser of honours. He received neither office nor reward from the university which owed so much to his labours. He never married, and led a life of self-denial, entirely devoted to antiquarian research. Bell-ringing and music were his chief relaxations. His literary style is poor, and his taste and judgment are frequently warped by prejudice, but his two groat works and unpublished collections form a priceless source of information on Oxford and her worthies. He was always suspected of being a Roman Catholic, and invariably treated Jacobites and Papists better than Dissenters in the Athenae, but he died in communion with the Church of England. Wood's original manuscript (purchased by the Bodleian in 1846) was first published by John Gutch as The History and Antiquities of the Colleges and Halls in the University of Oxford, with a con- We are intimately acquainted with the most minute particulars of Wood's life from his Diaries (1657-1695) and autobiography; all earlier editions are now superseded by the elaborate work of Andrew Clark, The Life and Times of Anthony Wood, Antiquary, of Oxford, 1632-169$, described by himself (Oxford Historical Society, 1891-1900, 5 vols. 8vo). Part 2: Oscar Wilde's Epigrammatic Theater people's standards of conduct. Mrs. Henry Wood, (18141887) East Lynne.London Richard Bentley, 1861. In Wilde's Lady Windermere's http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/fales/exhibits/wilde/1epigram.htm
Extractions: Oscar Wilde won his greatest literary fame in the theater, and his chosen mode of expression was the epigram a form which allowed him to flaunt his style and sophisticated mastery of life and literature. It is well known that Wilde's plays have epigrams liberally sprinkled throughout them, but it is important to realize the extent to which the epigram shapes Wilde's dramatic structure and themes. Wilde's epigrams invoke a response and then frustrate it. For example, a character in The Importance of Being Earnest While this has left Wilde open to charges of being a mere theatrical manipulator, it is in fact central to the type of theater Wilde wanted to create: a space in which the audience is allowed to recognize the rules of literary and theatrical history, and to share the pleasure of watching those rules circumvented. Wilde thus shares the pleasure of being in an elitist community with his audience, establishing an alternate aristocracy of the "ins" and "outs," with knowledge not money or birth required for membership. This is the pleasure of Wilde's epigrammatic theater. Francesca Coppa

William Senior. and Betty moved to a newly built family house on Lark Hill, which they called Dorset Cottage. S adly in 1837 Betty Holden died at the age of 57 and was buried at Whittington, this was to be the first of many family burials at Whittington. In January 1842 William Junior's infant twins Hyla and Reuben aged just three and four days were buried here by their grandfather. In July of that same year Rev. William Rose Holden laid the corner stone of the new church, to which he had been the biggest subscriber. He was the Bishop's Chaplain at the dedication service in 1844 and his son Hyla, a solicitor, gave a silver alms dish, the inscription on the reverse of which records this and other items given by him: -
