Extractions: by Gregg Pearlman Saturday, February 12, 2000 The Giants continue to make no particular news, and that might be a good thing. Let other teams make the news. Teams like the Braves not that it's their fault, really and the Mariners and Reds not that it's their fault, really. What's been happening is, Braves reliever John Rocker has been suspended until May, and hearings have already begun. Meanwhile, the Reds finally got their man, Ken Griffey Junior, for (as EEEEEE! Contributing Editor David Beck might say) three walnuts, a helium-filled balloon, and a Ted Nugent album. There'll be plenty more later about both items, but long story short: There sure is a lot of B.S. going on. But off baseball for just a moment. The title of the February installment or installments, depending isn't standard, ages-old whining about the Giants; nor is it even standard EEEEEE! stuff. Rather, it's my tribute to Charles M. Schulz, whose death from colon cancer has just been reported. The McCovey line comes a famous strip in late 1962 in which, for three panels, Linus and a dejected-looking Charlie Brown sit silently on a curb; in the fourth panel, Charlie Brown leaps up and screams that line something with which any longtime Giants fan identify. Schulz was, by all accounts, a profound influence on a great many comics writers and artists, and heck, the man was a Giants fan. Even though "Peanuts" almost certainly was at its best in the 1960s and '70s, I'll miss him, and I suspect a lot of you will, too.

Extractions: Associated Press NEW YORK Tom Glavine has spent much of his career trying to prevent the New York Mets from winning. Now, the Mets are counting on Glavine to reverse two years of disappointment. Glavine, one of the biggest free-agent acquisitions in Mets history, was officially introduced Monday after taking a physical. He agreed last week to a $35 million, three-year contract. The deal includes an option for a fourth year, based on innings pitched, that could make it worth $42.5 million. "The chapter in Atlanta is over now," Glavine said. "I look forward to beginning a new chapter in New York. I look forward to coming here and bringing the New York Mets to that next level they're trying to get to."

Box 30001 Las Cruces, NM 88003 dwidger@nmsu.edu The past few months have been busy ones for the Alumni Association, with chapter events, football games, picnics and homecoming preparations. All of these activities are always fun, but truly make the time pass very quickly. California Bay Area Alumni Reception - Aug. 27, 1998 President and Mrs. Conroy, Vice President for University Advancement Marcia Muller and myself were in Santa Clara for one of the best alumni receptions in that area in some time. Jack Burleson, '44, along with Bill Wunsch, '46, planned the fun evening. We had alumni ranging from the 1940s to 1995. Graduates had a great time telling their tales of the campus during their time. Everyone is ready to get the Bay Area Alumni Chapter back to 100 attendees. Active members are thinking about fun activities that will draw Aggies. I am looking forward to what they come up with. Door prizes are always a hit, but this year I had a few of the "Friends Don't Let Friends Go To UNM" shirts left. Those I had left in the office were ordered that night. I wish I had more, but unfortunately the story from the printer is UNM won't let us print these anymore. Well, they were fun while they lasted.

It is too bad I can't get frequent driver miles. The Honors Nights give me the opportunity to drive between 8,500 and 10,000 miles in eight weeks. The driving and being away from home is all worth it: 6,700 students and their families joined us for the awards. Nearly 3,000 - the best and brightest students in New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, received awards for their academic achievements. Denton, Texas - Feb. 20, 1999 Seventy-five Aggies in the Dallas/ Ft.
