This "decennial" T he 2000 Decennial Census of Population and Housing made several important changes in their data collection process that will provide new information for prevention planners. The biggest change is in the way that racial and ethnic information was collected. In previous censuses, respondents were asked to "choose one" racial or ethnic category from a short list. This presented a dilemna for those Americans raised in multi-ethnic households. The 2000 Census changed the procedure, first by greatly increasing the list of responses, and second by allowing more than one category to be selected. The census provides information about the size of the population, their ages and educational levels, employment patterns, ethnicity, incomes, and household characteristics. Information about family size, the number of parents present in a household, parent education level, parent income, ethnic origin, number of youth living in the household, and countless other variables can be extracted from the census files. While information is not provided on an "individual household" basis, it is available on an aggregate basis for each small census tract or block. In other words, census data will identify the
