Extractions: African Traditional Religions The Bushmen and Hottentots live in southern Africa and were the original inhabitants of the land when the first Europeans arrived at the Cape. Today the true Bushmen (Khoisan) are restricted to the Kalahari Desert and Namibia. Modern Bushmen pray to celestial spirits and tell myths and legends about them. They pay special attention to the moon, which comes into their speculations about the origins of death, a common African preoccupation. The Hottentots have largely become Christian and most of their ancient religious beliefs have disappeared, so much so that it was once thought that they had no former religion. Their ancient gods appear to have been a mingling of natural forces and ancestral spirits. In the sub-Saharan and forest areas there are small groups of Hamites (Caucasians, related to Europeans) such as the Fulani of Nigeria, but they are Muslims like the major Hamite groups of North Africa and the Tuaregs of the Sahara. A vast majority of Africans south of the Sahara are Negroes, and they generally have a belief in a supreme being, though their conception of his role in daily life differs according to localities. Despite the universality of belief in a supreme being in Africa regular worship is not generally given to him. There are no great temples or organized cults for him in most places, though there are a few exceptions. Yet despite this absence of formal worship and temples over most of Africa, the supreme being (or God) is a reality to many people. He is transcendent and there is a popular myth, told from West African to the Upper Nile, which says that he or the sky his dwelling place was once much nearer to the earth.

Extractions: Bosnian Traditional Instruments Until the twentieth century, the majority of instruments that have served Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina were adopted from the East. These consist of different types of long-necked lutes - tambura , sargija, and saz - the zurna , a double reed instrument and many types of membranophonic instruments and cymbals. The saz was primarily an urban instrument of large dimensions strung with 6-10 metal strings that ran over a large number of low frets ( perdeta ). It was used mostly to accompany lyric songs and rarely to accompany dances of an Oriental type, for example the zaybek . The saz player ( sazlija ) demonstrated his ability to improvise in the lengthy instrumental introductions and intermezzi that were an essential part of lyric songs like the sevdalinka The tambura and sargija , instruments of small and medium format with 2, 4, or 6 strings, are used mainly in rural musical practice. The tambura is used to accompany Muslim epic songs or dances and the sargija to accompany dances and rural lyric songs. In the last decade, the

It is a talkative, affectionate cat, and appears in the traditional seal, blue, chocolate, and lilac point colors. Interesting breed fact: While very popular as a pet, the Traditional Siamese is not considered a separate breed by most breed registries. Normally, these cats are registered simply as Siamese. Although registered as Siamese, the traditional/applehead style is not competitive in the show ring. Potential owners wishing for a cat to show competitively should visit the Siamese breeders' page instead. Another possible show alternative is the Tonkinese , which has a similar body type to the Traditional Siamese. Associations: Traditional Siamese are not shown competitively in any organization but are registerable as Siamese. The major difference is in the conformation of the cats. A series of meetings among traditional Native American healers and the author resulted in a dialogue between the Native American world view and that of biomedicine. Recommendations arose for how treatment should proceed in the modern world and how best to introduce interested non-Natives to Native American healing practices. An approach was developed for bridging cultures to facilitate the interaction of non-Natives with traditional healers. One hundred sixteen patients were treated in this manner by the author in conjunction with traditional Native American healers. More than 80% of patients showed significant, persisting benefits of a time-intensive treatment program. A comparison group of patients derived from the author's emergency room patients showed significantly lower rates of improvement. The author suggests that an intensive treatment experience (inspired by Native American practices) over 7-10 days for treating chronic physical illness achieves both health benefits and improved cost utility.

Or do people learn and mentally organize their experience in similar ways in spite of differences in their cultures and in the content of what they have to learn? We know that all people, if raised in the appropriate environment, prove capable of learning to speak any language and to think and operate effectively in the context of any culture. But what about different people's traditional bodies of specialized lore? Are they organized in similar ways, or not? Cognitive psychologists are interested in understanding how specialists mentally process and store their knowledge so that they can retrieve it as needed. Traditional navigators of the Central Caroline Islands provide a case in point. The Carolinian art of navigation includes a sizable body of knowledge developed to meet the needs of ocean voyaging for distances of up to several hundred miles among the tiny islands and atolls of Micronesia. Lacking writing, local navigators have had to commit to memory their knowledge of the stars, sailing directions, seamarks, and how to read the waves and clouds to determine currents and predict weather.
