Early in his literary career, France published several popular works : Poemes Dores [Golden Verses], The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard, At the Sign of the Reine Pedauque, and The Mother-of-Pearl Box. In 1908, France published his fable of modern French History, the social satire Penguin Island. He followed with the historical work The Gods Are Athirst, in 1912.
