A Summer Idyll: Landscapes of the Brandywine Valley honors generations of artists who have drawn inspiration from the area and simultaneously affirms the region's importance in the development of American art. Since the early 19th century, the Brandywine Valley has been famous for its rich farmland; numerous mills; distinctive architecture built by Quaker, Scots-Irish, and Swedish settlers; and its role in historic events. The focus of much of this activity has been the Brandywine River itself, stretching for 60 miles from the Welsh Mountains of northern Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Wilmington, Delaware, where it joins with the Christina River before emptying into the Delaware River.     Extractions: 4 linear feet The papers of Laura Redden Searing, a poet and author whose works appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and Searing's writings. Also included are correspondence, publicity clippings, and photographs of Searing's daughter, Elsa Searing McGinn. The Laura Redden Searing Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Searing's great-grandson, Thomas McGinn Smith, on 5 January 1998 (Accession No. 5744). Additions to the collection were made on 14 April 1998, 28 July 1998, 12 January 1999, and 16 August 2000. The papers are part of the National Women and Media Collection. Consult the reference staff about the restrictions on this collection. Laura Catherine Redden was born on 9 February 1840 in Somerset County, Maryland. Her family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, when she was a child. At about the age of ten, Redden lost her hearing as the result of a bout with spinal meningitis. She spent a brief time with a family in Pekin, Illinois, before enrolling at the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Fulton, Missouri, in 1855. In 1858 she returned to St. Louis and took a job as editor of the St. Louis Presbyterian and also wrote a number of poems and articles that appeared in the St. Louis Republican under the penname Howard Glyndon.

    Extractions: Early Writers Flocked To Mammoth Cave By Bob Thompson - 2000 More has been written about Mammoth Cave National Park than any other cave system in the world. Since the beginning of guided tours in 1816, the cave has hosted a number of prominent writers, doctors, surveyors, preachers, naturalists, and historians. The one thing they all had in common was the desire to see, learn, and write about the cave. Each individual penned personal and detailed accounts of the cave, which were published in books, magazines, and newspapers. One of the earliest accounts was by Dr. Robert Montgomery Bird (1806-1854) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bird came to Mammoth Cave in the summers of 1833 and 1835 and stayed at the Gatewood House. Mr. Gatewood, who owned the cave at the time, built a log house tavern about 100 yards from the cave's entrance (where the Mammoth Cave Hotel is today). Bird's description of Mammoth Cave was published in 1838 in the book, Peter Pilgrim, or A Rambler's Recollections. Quoting from his book, "The Mammoth Cave is still the monarch of caves. None that have ever been measured can at all compare with it. Even in extent, in grandeur; in wild, solemn, severe, unadorned majesty, it stands entirely alone. It has no brother; it is like no brother." A year before Peter Pilgrim, Bird also wrote about the 1780s settlement of Kentucky, in what is considered his best-known novel, Nick of the Woods. Bird complemented his literary career as a professor of medicine, an editor, a farmer, and a politician, as well as an accomplished artist. He actively made sketches and drawings of his travels of America (including Mammoth Cave) and Europe.

    Extractions: In the 1820s, the Western world was thrilled to hear news of the rediscovery of the monuments of ancient Nubia - or "Kush," as it was called in the Bible. The ruins, hundreds of miles south of Egypt in the Sudan, had been reported almost simultaneously by individual British, French, and American travellers, whose excited descriptions and glorious illustrations of temples and pyramid fields delighted scholars and reawakened interest in this mysterious African kingdom. Greek traditions told of Memnon, a legendary Nubian king who had fought in the Trojan War; they spoke of Nubia's people, who were the "tallest and handsomest on earth," and whose piety was so great that the gods preferred their offerings to those of all other men. They also knew that historical Nubian kings had once conquered Egypt and ruled it for sixty years and that their dynasty was counted as Egypt's Twenty-fifth. The Greeks, however, did not call these people "Nubians" or "Kushites," as we do today; they called them Aithiopes ("Ethiopians"), which in Greek meant "Burnt-Faced Ones." They knew perfectly well that Nubians were black-skinned, as are the Sudanese of the same regions today. During the 1840s, the great German egyptologist, Karl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884) led an expedition to record the monuments of Egypt and Sudan for the King of Prussia. On his return, he asserted confidently that the Greek term "Ethiopian," when referring to the ancient civilized people of Kush, did not apply to "negroes," but was used to describe reddish-skinned people closely related to the Egyptians, who "belonged to the Caucasian race." Again, in 1852, when the American diplomat Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) visited Sudan and gazed upon the temple carvings of sumptuously clad gods and rulers with clearly African features, he also found it inconceivable that they could have been created by black-skinned Africans. Rather, he asserted, echoing Lepsius, they must have been created by Egyptians or by immigrants from India or Arabia, or, in any case, "by an offshoot ... of the race to which we belong."

Mailer told one of his publisher's editors, "Novelists are supposed to look into the eye of the tiger," and certainly a life of Jesus related by Jesus himself is a daring enterprise. The result, however, is not particularly surprising. Mr. Mailer presents a good man, who does indeed hear divine instructions and advice, whose miracles are genuine (and also exhausting), and who loses his temper, contradicts himself, worries about the source of his power, and fears for the future of his people and the movement he has started. What is missing in this reasonable character is any hint of the magnetically persuasive preacher that Jesus must have been. Satan and Judas have considerably more energy, probably because Mr. Mailer had less Scripture and therefore more freedom in imagining them. One can hardly hold this against the author: Milton had similar trouble. Satan is a great scene stealer.

The ordinary glass eyes are discarded, and hollow globes, specially made, are hand-painted from nature, and are fixed in the head so as to convey the exact expression which the pose of the body demands. Birds, if of any size, can be modelled in like manner, and fishes are treated by a nearly identical process, being finally coloured as in a “ still life “ painting. To give a life-like representation, attention is also paid to artistic “mounting.” By this is meant the surrounding of specimens with appropriate accessories, and it is well exemplified by the work shown in the natural history museum at South Kensington, where, for example, birds are arranged as in a state of nature. The great American museums have extended a similar method to the mounting of even large mammals, whilst they have made bird groups naturally still more life-like by panoramic backgrounds and top and side lighting of the cases.
