Now how does GNU development work? RMS: Umm, first, please be careful with that word "product". Product implies that something is made to be sold. Now, software companies develop software to sell copies. So that's a product. Whereas the aim of the GNU project is to create a better community. We sell copies to develop software. So there is a fundamental difference. FSF has four full time programmers, and they write the software. However, there are many volunteers involved. By the way, I'm a volunteer, too. I don*t get paid from FSF. As the president of FSF, I want to encourage people to donate and volunteer, so I want to set an example myself. HY: So this HURD, do you feel that it is as advanced as you aimed to be in the first place? RMS: Having said that, in the case of HURD, there is quite a technical advance in it. The underlying design is more clean and powerful, and that hasn't been surpassed by any other existing system.

This would block one of Microsoft's favorite tactics: secret and incompatible interfaces. Require Microsoft to use its patents for defense only, in the field of software. (If they happen to own patents that apply to other fields, those other fields could be included in this requirement, or they could be exempt.) This would block the other tactic Microsoft mentioned in the Halloween documents: using patents to block development of free software. Require Microsoft not to certify any hardware as working with Microsoft software, unless the hardware's complete specifications have been published, so that any programmer can implement software to support the same hardware.

(Answer: Yeaaah) But this spirit of unlocking doors wasn't an isolated thing, it was part of an entire way of life. The hackers at the AI lab were really enthusiastic about writing good programs, and interesting programs. And it was because they were so eager to get more work done, that they wouldn't put up with having the terminals locked up, or lots of other things that people could do to obstruct useful work. The differences between people with high morale who really care about what they're trying to do, and people who think of it as just a job. If it's just a job, who cares if the people who hired you are so stupid they make you sit and wait, it's their time, their money but not much gets done in a place like that, and it's no fun to be in a place like that.

Extractions: In late September, 1994, Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation posted an article to comp.lang.tcl and several other newsgroups titled Why you should not use Tcl . Predictably, a flamewar ensued, which lasted in one form or another for almost a month (until it was pre-empted by the GNU project's announcement of plans for its own extension language , later dubbed GUILE Like most flamewars, there was much heat and little light. However, there was some light, and as the maintainer of the Tcl bibliography (which attempts to be very thorough), I took it upon myself to archive the interesting posts, partly to give the bibliography entry something to point at, and also to provide a balanced perspective: it seemed likely, even at the beginning, that the GNU project would archive Stallman's original article and redistribute it without the many reasonable rebuttals which appeared. Although I tried to take a neutral perspective, and saved articles espousing diverse points of view, this selection unavoidably reflects my own prejudices. Included are a few articles which contain nothing but a snappy comeback. I missed a few important articles, such as one by Bill Janssen which started an entire lengthy subthread. The only practical use for this code is to run the non-free part of MacOS. It will not help free operating systems, because they already have the low-level drivers for the PowerPC Mac. Apparently this was not entirely true. People tell me that some of the information in the released sources has resolved some remaining uncertainty about the hardware, which has helped the writing of PowerPC Mac drivers for Linux. It is good of Apple to make this information available, but this does not affect the main conclusions of my analysis. Also, some say that the code released is actually a system which is sufficient for certain uses (though not including the graphical convenience that is the Macintosh's main technical feature). If so, I stand corrected; perhaps the code Apple has released would make some nontrivial contribution to the free software community, if the current APSL were replaced with a free software license.

It was called TRIX, and was developed by someone at MIT (I don't remember who). I think that I eventually concluded it was not really usable as a starting point. One factot was that it ran only on an obscure machine, and would have required porting before we could even try to develop it further. The GNU Project's kernel now, of course, is the Hurd; it is evidently getting close to ready for more widespread distribution. Free operating systems based on other kernels are now widely used; what will Hurd-based systems offer that will make them attractive relative to the others? The Hurd offers the power of a microkernel-and-servers architecture. For instance, you can run two copies of the Hurd at the same time, debug the new one using the old one, even gradually switch from one version to another. You can even use GDB to debug the file system while the system is runningthread-specific breakpoints allow you to debug the file system's activity for certain files, while the same file server runs normally when GDB opens the source files of the file system. These servers do not in general require special privileges. As an ordinary user you can write a new file system and attach it to a file name in your directory. Then anyone who accesses that file name talks to your file system. The file system can emulate the behavior of a single file, or the behavior of a directory.

Even the name of the operating system, to which Torvalds contributed a small but essential part, acknowledges Torvalds alone: the Stallman part the GNU before Linux is almost always left out. It makes Stallman mad. At a press conference during the show, one unlucky journalist thoughtlessly called it Linux and got an earful for his mistake. With a mane of long black hair and a Rasputin-like beard, Stallman looks like a wild man. He carries his possessions in plastic bags. In one hand, a bag is crammed with boxes of tea. In the other, he clutches his traveling kit, which includes a battered laptop.
