The letters from 1931-1964 are those to and from Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, author and social reformer, which Harris acquired during his research. Extractions: The Jungle , published in 1906, that he became an internationally known author. The success of this novel, which deals with the appalling conditions in the meat packing plants in Chicago, not only made Sinclair a rich man but also provided the final impetus for passage of the pure food law of 1906. With the proceeds from the sale of the novel Sinclair set up a communal living experiment called Helicon Hall in New Jersey. A fire just one year later destroyed everything and left Sinclair and his young family impoverished once again. Dragon's Teeth , won the Pulitzer prize for literature in 1943. The eleven volumes were wide-ranging historical novels presenting the political history of the Western World from 1913-1950, and they were immensely popular. After the death of his third wife in December 1967, Sinclair moved to a nursing home in New Jersey to be near his son, David, and family. He died peacefully, November 25, 1968. th birthday greetings, an EPIC organization plan, an address book, etc. Series III, Writings, is subdivided into Major full-length works; Articles, including book reviews, pamphlets, short stories, and stage and screenplays; Poems; Speeches; and Writings by others. inventory to the collection is available. Extractions: Power and the Individual in Literature Countless works of fiction have of course dealt with social injustice and the abuse of power. European novelists of the nineteenth century seem to have been particularly aware of the societal origins of interpersonal strife and personal distress: money and power (in particular their lack) are the constant preoccupation of most of their fictional characters. Twentieth century literature, on the other hand, is far more often concerned (no doubt thanks in part to Freud) with 'psychology' and 'inner worlds'. Relatively few writers of any era, however, attempt to go beyond the immediacy of their characters' experience and actions (in my terms 'proximal' considerations) to try to expose the more 'distal' roots of the feelings and events they describe. The plot is usually played out in the immediate relations with each other of the characters, and solutions to social predicaments will be achieved (or not) through 'relationships'. The redeeming power of love is all too often seen as the only hope (even where it fails, as in some of the twentieth century dystopias like Nineteen-Eighty-Four ). Perhaps 'distal' preoccupations simply don't fit with art: certainly when writers do try to lengthen their perspective to take in the origins of unhappiness they do so often rather at the expense of artistic merit. Following are examples of some more or less successful attempts to open up just such a perspective.

His best-known novel was The Jungle, which was an expose of the appalling and unsanitary conditions in the meat-packing industry. The Jungle was influential in obtaining passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. Sinclair's interests ranged over a wide variety of topics in his many books and articles. He would receive a Pulitzer Prize for a later novel about Hitler's rise to power. His contemporary, the writer Edmund Wilson, would say of him: "Practically alone among the American writers of his generation, [Sinclair] put to the American public the fundamental questions raised by capitalism in such a way that they could not escape them." Extractions: Archives: Finding Aid ABSTRACT: Papers, mostly dating from the late 1920s and early 1930s, of a glaciologist and lecturer who specialized in Russian geography and culture. The collection includes notes, postcards, travel journals, photographs and motion pictures of his journeys throughout the Soviet Union, especially Georgia and its upper Svanetia (Swanetia) regions, from 1928 until the 1970s. Field's partially indexed photographs and movie film contain images of Moscow from 1929-1931 and Georgia in 1933. The photographs document local architecture, geography, and people. The collection also includes a series of 1931 letters from Upton Sinclair and others requesting financial assistance for Sergei Eisenstein's uncompleted film about Mexico, Que viva Mexico. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: William Osgood Field was born in New York City on January 30, 1904. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard in 1926. In 1929, he married Alice Withrow. He produced educational and travel motion pictures from the 1920s through the 1950s, focusing on geographical studies. He illustrated his lectures on glaciology and Russian culture with photographs from his travels. In 1946, he became head of the Department of Exploration and Field Research for the American Geographical Society and continued in this capacity until 1969. In 1957-1958, he served as chairman of the technical panel on glaciology for the U.S. National Commission for International Geophysicists. In 1970, he became part of the member council of the American Geographical Society.

That is too heavy a burden of suffering for any civilized community to carry." Upton Sinclair, during his race for Governor of California in 1934 Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. (1878-1968) was already a famous writer and radical when he settled in Southern California in 1915. Nine years earlier, his best-selling novel The Jungle had spurred reform of U.S. meat inspection laws and promoted passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. Sinclair was an outspoken Socialist and an activist for miners rights. Stormy as his life was before 1915, the years in California produced even greater controversy, and his campaign for Governor in 1934 assured him a permanent place in the states political history. Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 20, 1878. His grandfather and great-grandfather had distinguished naval careers (great-grandfather Commodore Arthur Sinclair fought in the first American naval battle of the Revolution). His parents were considered "impoverished Southern gentry." His father was a traveling salesman and a heavy drinker. Sinclair, a lifelong teetotaler, wrote often on the subject of alcoholism.
