After the war Sherman was commissioned lieutenant general in the regular army and, following Grant's election to the presidency (1868), he was promoted to the rank of full general and given command of the entire U.S. Army. He published his Memoirs in 1875 and retired in 1883. The famous phrase "war is hell" is attributed to Sherman. An eccentric, yet highly intelligent man, Sherman knew that the war had to be taken to the common people in the south, if the fighting spirit of the Confederacy was to be broken. In the opening days of the war, Sherman made comments that led some in the north to believe that he sympathized with the Confederate causes. Many of his closest friends were Army officers who left the Union to join the Confederacy. Sherman's early prediction that the war would be a long and bloody struggle led some in the north to believe that he was crazy. Of the northern generals, many consider Sherman to be one of the most capable. Some compare him to Nathan Bedford Forrest, a notable Confederate General.

File on the Osage Indian Murders MFM 952 During the early 1920's between one and two dozen Osage Indians were murdered or simply "disappeared" from their oil-rich lands in northeastern Oklahoma. As wards of the federal government, their special status brought investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who met fear and suspicion from the Osage and friendly whites alike. Despite the difficulties, the FBI, under the young director J. Edgar Hoover, avidly pursued the murderers and eventually secured life-term convictions in what became one of its most celebrated cases. He was a renowned Union general during the U.S. Civil War and was among the first military leaders to recognize and put into practice the methods that became the tenets of modern warfare. At the start of the Civil War the fiery-tempered Sherman was a colonel and commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. When Grant became general in chief, Sherman commanded the large Union army of approximately 100,000 men that moved southeast from Dalton, Ga. Although roundly defeated in rash attacks at Kenesaw Mountain, he captured Atlanta in September 1864 after a long series of cat-and-mouse contests with Joseph E. Johnston. An aggressive leader, Sherman was expert in planning and executing long marches and in mastering difficult logistical problems. Spreading out his army about 50 miles wide, he conducted a scorched-earth campaign against the Confederacy ravaging the unprotected Georgia countryside in the famous March to the Sea (Nov. 16-Dec. 22,1864) that resulted in the capture of Savannah. Editor's note: General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) fought in the Civil War for the Union and is perhaps best remembered for his invasion of Georgia when he captured Atlanta (September 1864) and commenced his "March to the Sea," finally taking Savannah (December). Sherman's army of 60,000 men pillaged and destroyed everything within a 60-mile wide swath of land, 300 miles in length. Although the march was largely unopposed and helped bring the war to a close, the general's tactics were loathed by many. The significance of Sherman's speech below is the explanation he gives as to why he felt compelled to adopt this military tactic. Notice Sherman's comment, "I know there are parties that denounce me as inhuman," voiced before this mostly friendly crowd. Perhaps he was concerned about his legacy in history, given the disfavor of his name in the South, and that this speech was more of an address to the nation than just the residents of Salem. Approximately 25,000 persons were there to hear his speech which he presented on a wooden platform having a backdrop of "tattered battle-flags of various Illinois regiments and mottoes complimentary to General Sherman, Governor Oglesby, and General Logan." In addition, Col. E., N. Bates, of Centralia, read the Declaration of Independence and General John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), Union general and U.S. senator, also gave a speech that day.

Extractions: 1 folder, photocopy of a typescript Memoir of an unknown observer (actually Theodore Pease Russell, see the biographical sketch below) of the 1864 Battle of Pilot Knob. He describes weapons used, skirmishes, regiments, officers, and casualties. Fred L. Hill donated the photocopy of the typescript to the State Historical Society of Missouri on 18 May 1973 (SHS Accession No. 1013). Although described as a memoir of an unknown observer, Theodore Pease Russell wrote this memoir which originally appeared in "A Summer in Arcadia Valley," a supplement to the Iron County, Missouri, Register , of 26 June 1890. Russell was originally from Connecticut but moved to the Ozarks shortly before the start of the Civil War. Burwell Fox, Russell's son-in-law, edited the memoir. And never have as many travel accounts been written dealing with so short a period of American life as appeared on the Confederacy. This collection of 3598 microfiche reproduces most of the 492 books of travel included in the annotated bibliography of the same title compiled by E. Merton Coulter in 1961. It includes "diaries, series of letters written from the scenes of action, reminiscences, autobiographies, and narratives written primarily as travel accounts".
