This campaign included Ruskin's book Modern Painters I (1843) where he highly praised Turner's work. Ruskin also wrote Modern Painters II (1846) where he championed the pre-Raphaelites.

Extractions: John Ruskin John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites . Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti Millais and Holman Hunt , as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold . He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway , and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolour painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

Extractions: Grave location: Coniston, Cumbria: St. Andrew's Churchyard Writer of extensive works on art in which he emphasized the importance of nature for spiritual health. He was among the first to recognize the qualities of Turner and defended the pre-raphaelites against the vigorous attacks by the critics. He had a huge personal fortune that he used for filantropic projects. His marriage to Effie Gray was annulled on the groud of non-consummation and she married his friend John Millais, whose work he had always praised highly. From 1858 on he loved Rose La Touche, until even after her death in 1875. Ruskin blasted the paintings of Whistler and wrote about "Nocturne in Black and Gold: the Falling Rocket" that Whistler was 'flinging a pot of paint in the public face' and that asking 200 guineas for it was nearly wilful imposture. Whistler sued him for this and a trial surrounded by much publicity followed. Ruskin wasn't present, and Whistler won after a brilliant defense. But since he was awarded only one farthing in damages and had to pay the costs of the trial, he eventually went bankrupt.

He fiercely attacked the worst aspects of industrialization, and actively promoted art education and museums for the working classes. His prophetic statements on environmental issues speak to our generation as well as to his own. Born on 8 February 1819, the son of a prosperous sherry importer, Ruskin became a published poet and writer on geology by the age of fifteen, by which time he knew the Bible intimately. Son of a wealthy wine merchant, he was brought up in a cultured and religious family, but his mother's over protectiveness undoubtedly contributed to his later psychological troubles. On his frequent trips in Europe, he took an artists's and poet's delight both in landscape and works of art, especially medieval and Renaissance. His first great work, Modern Painters (5 volumes, 1843-60), began as a passionate defence of Turner's pictures, but became a study of the principles of Art. In The Seven Lamps Of Architecture (1849) and The Stones Of Venice (1851) he similarly treated the fundamentals of architecture. These principles enabled him, incidentally, to appreciate and defend the Pre-Raphaelites, then the target of violence and abuse. To Ruskin the relationship between art, morality and social justice was of paramount importance and he increasingly became preoccupied with social reform. His concern inspired, among others, William Morris and Arnold Toynbee, whilst in the practical field he founded the Working Men' s college (1854) and backed with money the experiments of Octavia Hill in the management of house property. He advocated social reforms which later were adopted by all political parties old age pensions, universal free education, better housing. Gothic was for Ruskin the expression of an integrated and spiritual civilisation; classicism represented paganism and corruption; the use of cast iron, and the increasing importance of function in architecture and engineering seemed to him a lamentable trend. He was Slade Professor of art at Oxford (1870-79) and (1883-84). His later works, eg.
