His mother, Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori was the sister of Byron's physician John Polidori, who had committed suicide at a young age. His father, Gabriele, was a literary scholar who was obsessed with the works of Dante and spoke mainly in Italian. Young Gabriel therefore spoke Italian as well as English from a very early age. When he was born, Gabriel already had an older sister Maria. His younger brother William and sister Christina were the next additions to the family. Early on, Rossetti demonstrated literary and artistic talent and aspirations. One family legend has it that in 1834 a local milkman was amazed as he watched six-year old Gabriel creating a drawing of a rocking horse. In 1841, Rossetti entered the Sass's Academy art school, a preparatory school for the art Academy. He soon grew tired of the grinding, repetitive exercises and often just stayed at home to paint what he desired. Gabriel entered the Royal Academy Antique school in 1846, but found it just as dull as Sass's. What's more, his growing interest in and talent for poetry sometimes left him indecisive over which path to followwas he mainly a poet or a painter? He had, by this time, translated several volumes of Italian poetry into English, corresponded with various poets and writers, and had started developing what would become some of his most famous poems.

It is this contribution to art history for which Rossetti is today chiefly remembered and admired. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born in London, England, in 1828. As a young man, he briefly studied art with the painter Ford Madox Brown. During the same year (1848), the charismatic Rossetti was to meet fellow artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. This group of friends and colleagues - Rossetti, Hunt, and Millais - would together form the core of the innovative Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (the PRB). The program devised by the members of this group was to have a profound effect on Rossetti's early artistic development, the results of which can be seen in such works as The Girlhood of Mary Virgin and The Annunciation . In time, the painter broke away from the strict demands of the PRB and developed his own unique style. Ultimately, Rossetti's mature works focused on the depiction of stunning images of women.

The story of his life and work is compelling, with complications and touches of tragedy and triumph. And while a biography of Rossetti is interesting to read, his art says much more than words ever could about the life of this remarkable artist. Rossetti worked during the Victorian era, but he was not necessarily a Victorian artist - his paintings were more intensely personal and visionary that those of many of his contemporaries. In his works, we can trace the evolution of his obsessions, from early Pre-Raphaelite inspired images of Medieval knights and ladies, to later paintings that focus almost exclusively on depicting a very specific type of woman. This "Rossetti" woman is his signature, his artistic trademark. She - in all of her manifestations and permutations - was his Muse. The way in which Rossetti glorified this idealized style of beauty is one of his most memorable legacies. On July 7, 1865, the English painter and poet Dante Gabrielle Rossetti commissioned the photographer John R. Parsons to create a series of photographs featuring his then-lover and favorite model, Jane Morris. These photographs, which were taken at Rossetti's residence in London, depicted Morris (who was the wife of the well-known Aesthetic Movementartist William Morris) in a variety of poses. The Allen's photograph depicts Jane Morris leaning against a support pole in a large outdoor tent in Rossetti1s garden. Rossetti, who was known to add paint to photographs to enhance their appearance, most likely did the slight re-touching that is evident in Morris' face. The image is enclosed in a frame, the style of which recalls a 15th century Venetian tabernacle. Both the photograph and the frame exemplify the tastes of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, a group of English artists (led by Rossetti) who wanted to recapture the simplicity and realism of early Italian art.

    Extractions: Although Lord Leighton of Stretton is more properly considered a neo-classicist and, as Rossetti said of him, "was wholly opposed to their (i.e., the Pre-Raphaelite credo of art) views", this painting reflects a strong Pre-Raphaelite influence, both in form, content, and execution, despite Leighton's imaginary posthumous denunciations to the contrary. "Flaming June" (46x46 inches) now resides in the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895. There is a crayon study for this painting at Leighton House; at least one other is known. The design of the picture was first intended as a decorative bas-relief for the marble bath on which the figure in his "Summer Studies" reclines. Leighton was suffering from his last illness while painting this picture, and he died in the following year. "Flaming June" was on loan to the Ashmolean between 1915 and 1930, but apparently disappeared. It was not publicly known again until its rediscovery in 1963.
