Reynolds, Sir Joshua Secret Encyclopaedia Gnomiz Paperback (March 1998) That Sir Joshua Reynolds (17231792) became the most fashionablepainter of his time was not simply due to his artistic gifts or good http://www.gnomiz.it/nexus/arte00/reynolds.htm
Extractions: .Thus I dared looking for those "common values" in the world of Fashion among many people who hold out without having to rely on an understanding. The outcome is amid paintings and sculptures "out of season" dedicated to abstract expressions levity and photo advertising important pictures, objects and perfumes play and strangely enough to some elderly portraits ......so is there really a necessity for a subject? Reynolds, Sir Joshua (The Frick Collection, New York) Born at Plympton, Devonshire, Reynolds served a brief apprenticeship under Thomas Hudson in London before launching his career as a portrait painter in Plymouth. Between 1749 and 1752 he was in Italy, where the study of ancient art and the Italian masters profoundly affected his style. Soon after his return he became the most fashionable portraitist in London. Reynolds was a prolific painter whose variety of approach was envied by his rival, Thomas Gainsborough. As the first President of the Royal Academy, Reynolds delivered a series of Discourses that were highly influential in shaping British aesthetic theory. He was a close friend of some of the leading personalities of his time, including Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke, and Garrick.

Extractions: Co-winner of the 1997 Annibel Jenkins Biography Prize of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies That Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) became the most fashionable painter of his time was not simply due to his artistic gifts or good fortune. The art of pleasing, Richard Wendorf contends, was as much a part of Reynolds's successin his life and in his workas the art of painting. The author's examination of Reynolds's life and career illuminates the nature of eighteenth-century English society in relation to the enterprise of portrait-painting. Conceived as an experiment in cultural criticism, written along the fault lines that separate (but also link) art history and literary studies, Sir Joshua Reynolds: The Painter in Society explores the ways in which portrait-painting is embedded in the social fabric of a given culture as well as in the social and professional transaction between the artist and his or her subject. In addition to providing a new view of Reynolds, Wendorf's book develops a thoroughly new way of interpreting portraiture.

Extractions: Portrait of the printer and publisher William Strahan (1715-1785), who ran a highly important and successful business in the eighteenth century, at one time employing 50 men. Strahan was Samuel Johnson's chief publisher and also published the works of the philosopher David Hume. The original painting by Reynolds from which this print was made may be viewed online on the web site of the National Portrait Gallery in London where it is part of the permanent collection. The painting was first exhibited in 1783. Sir Joshua Reynolds was the foremost portrait painter in England in the 18th century, and was extremely influential on later generations of artists. His poses were intended to invoke classical values and to enhance the dignity of his sitters. His style incorporated strong lighting, rich color and bravura paint handling. He also made history and "fancy pictures." As first president of the Royal Academy in London, he significantly raised the profile of art and artists in Britain. Reynolds is also known for his eloquent Discourses on Art, delivered to the students and members of the Academy between 1769 and 1790. John Jones was a London-based engraver and printseller active from 1775. He was a mezzotint and stipple engraver mainly of portraits by Reynolds, Romney and others, as well as works by Bunbury and Rowlandson. He published most of his plates himself. Extractions: Portrait of a cheerful, barefoot little girl standing on a stepping stone in the middle of a brook. "Sylvia" may be her name, or it may be an allegorical title personifying her as an inhabitant of the sylvan, or woodland, setting of the portrait. "Fancy pictures," which were a combination portrait and genre scene, became very popular at the end of the 18th century. One type consisted of middle-class patrons, dressed as peasants or farmers, in staged scenes of rural life. This appears to be in that genre. Sir Joshua Reynolds was the foremost portrait painter in England in the 18th century, and was extremely influential on later generations of artists. His poses were intended to invoke classical values and to enhance the dignity of his sitters, as is evident in his treatment of this young rural girl. His style incorporated strong lighting, rich color and bravura paint handling. He also made history and "fancy pictures."
