(from (1781 -1783). Guide To Fantasy, Part 2 These are by Rudolf Erich Raspe (17371794) Vademecum für lustige Leute (Companionfor Merry Men) periodical 1781-83, which contained stories later published http://www.outlanders.fsnet.co.uk/fan2.htm
Extractions: This second section of the guide is a survey of the most interesting and influential works and authors of fantasy from about 1710 to 1890. The identification of this period as the Age of Gothic Horror is made evident by the predominance of mauve and blue among the background colours, and the inclusion of many of the horror classics such as Frankenstein and Dracula. It may be said that the reactions of modern readers to some gothic horror fiction are often not what their authors would have expected. Many of us have become desensitised to excesses, both in fiction and reality, and made aware of humorous incongruities by modern spoofs such as the Munsters and the Addams family. However, it would be wrong to identify everything in this period as Gothic. Another important strand is an outward-looking approach that can be put down to the real-life exploits of the great explorers, travellers, naturalists and anthropologists of the time, which led in particular to the enormous popularity of stories of Lost Races and Continents. Daniel Defoe
