Extractions: French Dramatist Racine was a master playwright who was inpired by the classical Greek tragedy. He was born in La Ferte-Milon, France. He studied at Beauvais and Port Royal, then went to Paris, where he began to write plays in 1664. The production of Andromaque (1667), the first of his 7 masterpieces, became one of the most important events in the history of French theater, and Racine became regarded as the master of tragic pathos. Other plays followed soon: Britannicus (1669); Bajazet (1672); and Berenice (1679). The great actress Sarah Bernhardt won fame playing the lead role in his most famous play - a tragedy called Phedre (1677). www link :

Sua obra é considerada entre as mais importantes da história da dramaturgia francesa sobretudo no campo da tragédia clássica, em que atingiu seu maior êxito. Órfão desde a primeira infância, Racine recebeu grande influência religiosa do Jansenismo ao ter sido criado por sua avó, que o enviou em sua adolescência à uma escola jansenista em Port Royal. A formação nesta escola o levou aos estudos dos clássicos gregos. Posteriormente estudou filosofia em Paris. Ao compor poemas de versificação proeminentemente clássica, utilizando os versos alexandrinos, passou a entrar em contato com o círculo literário parisiense, tornando-se amigo de importantes figuras como Molière, Boileau e La Fontaine. A partir de então passou a dedicar-se exclusivamente às artes teatrais, tendo seu talento literário reconhecido. Sua primeira obra na dramaturgia, " La Thébaide" , foi apresentada em 1664 com atuação da própria companhia de Molière, que inclusive produziu o espetáculo teatral. A experiência repetiu-se no ano seguinte com a representação de "Alexandre, o Grande". No entanto, suas maiores obras estão entre o conjunto posteriormente concebido na produção de Racine. Entre as principais obras são contadas as tragédias "Andrômaca", de 1667, em que já apresenta a temática do amor com complexidade dualizada entre amor e ódio, em que o sentimento amoroso torna-se destrutivo; Britânico, de 1669, em que há a apresentação dos preparativos de Nero ao cometer seu primeiro crime; Berenice, de 1670; e, entre várias outras , a tragédia "Fedra"
