Extractions: Letters from James Francis Tillotson to Jane Ann Sexton Tillotson All of the following letters were written by my great-grandfather James Francis Tillotson to his mother Jane Ann Sexton Tillotson . I do not have any of the responses she sent to him. James was the oldest child of Jane Ann and Franklin James Tillotson . James comes across as a simple hard-working man devoted to his wife and child with few diversions. He always asks his mother for news of his sisters and requests they write him or come to visit. I get the feeling that James missed not having his family at hand. At this time James's parents lived in Crete, Will County, Illinois about thirty miles south of downtown Chicago. James and Clara also have a great deal of trouble finding a reliable baby-sitter. Clara always had difficulty having children and was sick for long spells after giving birth. Her last two children both died at a young age. I've added punctuation in a few places to make the letters easier to read. I've left unaltered James's unorthodox spelling, phraseology, and capitalization. James infrequently created paragraph divisions, so I have added these too at appropriate points. Some of the letters written in pencil have faded badly. I found the text of some very difficult to make out. I've place "(?)" after words I could not make out. I do not know all of the individuals James mentions. I have identified the following members of his immediate family which appear a number of times:

It's an international effort, but the United States has the scientific lead on this, and as the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, that's sort of my job, to oversee this effort. If you were involved in any New Age activities at the time, you're likely to have participated in some way, and even if you weren't, there are so few sincere, global efforts for happy causes that this might stand out in your memory. From where I experienced it, living at a Course in Miracles -based intentional community in New Jersey, it was a momentous event. I was changing profoundly, and first tuning into the possibilities of participating in a global community of people who were committed to working toward an era of inner peace and world peace. The community and those we were connected with were experimenting with an appealing idea: if everyone minds their own process, follows their true calling and begins to withdraw energy from the big greed-fear-power system, at least we can start defusing the paranoia and begin creating what Ken Carey's Starseed Transmissions calls "islands of the future in a sea of the past." Those who are building support networks of self-sufficient, creatively-oriented people, whose lives are centered on becoming whole and joyous in the present, may know just what islands he means.

He gave me a joint once, down in a seaside village, outside of Rio. A colonel of the police, his wife, an autistic child, me, and Lourival, a man who was possessed by the spirit of John the Baptist (you could tell that because he held his head at an angle, where it had been chopped off). He wanted very badly to come to England to cure people of tuberculosis with the help of a candle, and a charm of some kind. SM: So what was the trip like? FH: Powerful, very powerful. It was very strange anyhow because this was an army colonel who headed the tank brigade just outside of Rio and he had all General Patton's tanks Including his command tank- he was very proud, he gave Lourival my friend, who was this shaman, and his English wife, and me a ride around the barracks in Rio in his Patton's tank . Then he gave us a barbecue feast with all the soldiers doing the barbecues and then he told us hideous stories about an electric shock machine that his friend the colonel so-and-so of the Secret Interrogation used to torment his prisoners with, and the story was you keep your captive in a very unpleasant cell for a couple of days and then you bring him up and just give him some water.

Unlike Cambodia and Laos, or even Myanmar, it has managed to rebuild lots of infrastructure. The roads are universally excellent, with flat tarmac surfaces. Bridges are easily destroyed in war, but now there are many new ones, including a magnificent one that I went over in the Mekong Delta. I've seen maybe even a dozen new bridges being built in my short journey through Vietnam. Halong City has a population of 150,000 people, slightly more than Cambridge in the UK. Its water system has been badly maintained over the years, and so has been recently refurbished. What's curious is how the refurbishment was funded... 90% by the Dutch government via a World Bank loan, and 10% by the local state Vietnamese water company. Evidently the people of Halong City needed an update to their water system, but it isn't entirely clear to me why the Dutch government funded it, especially when it is considered doubtful that the loan will ever be repaid. There's more to this. It must be for industrial economic development, as it is essentially for an urban environment, rather than the much poorer rural Vietnamese. Also, it doesn't seem a sensible use of development money as it isn't very catalytic, like education would be. To back this up, the project isn't very strong on training; the contractor doesn't have to train Vietnamese people to replace it in future.

I had the opportunity to talk about my experiences so far- to a group of over 70 people. Kickoffs, such as this one, are held nation wide. Usually, each county has their own relay-which the ACS uses the term Celebration of Life. Relay is a time to celebrate the battles won against cancer, mourn the ones lost, and a fun way to raise money to support the American Cancer Societys programs (prevention and awareness, improvement in quality of patients life, and research). Ive never been to an ACS Relay for Life- but Im told its more like a carnival. Extractions: Francis was born and raised near London. In high school during the early 1930s, he thought his future would be in engineering. Francis recalls that he had just "a slight interest - only slight" in photography. During his senior year, he was required to write an essay on a career field, and he chose the cinema. "I don't remember why," he says. Francis arranged to visit a London film studio. He was intrigued. After graduation in 1934, he got a job assisting a stills photographer at the studio Francis lugged the photographer's 8 by 10 camera gear, and also learned how to process film. When there was an opening for a clapper boy, Francis grabbed that opportunity. By 1938, he had advanced to camera operator when he was drafted into the military service.
