Extractions: Popular name for a Democratic Party organization in New York City. It was founded on May 12, 1789, as an organization of middle class residents determined to oppose the political influence of upper class residents who were members of the Society of the Cincinnati. Tammany was named after a legendary Delaware Indian Chief, and it supported Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson for the presidency in their bids for office. For the next fifty years, Tammany wielded great power in New York politics and practically controlled the city's Democratic Party. After 1868, when William Marcy Tweed was elected its grand sachem (or chief) Tammany's corrupt control of city government was fully exposed. The political machine had bilked tens of millions of dollars from the city. Tweed was imprisoned in 1871. From 1881 until the 1930s, Tammany ran New York City politics. Thereafter, although still a force in the city to this day, the Tammany machine is but a shadow of its former self.

Extractions: Catalog search in ... Keyword Relevancy Title Title Keyword Author Author Keyword Subject Subject Keyword Journal Title Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court.

Extractions: William McKinley 25th President of the United States William McKinley was one of the kindiest and most peace-loving of U.S. Presidents. Yet he led the United States at a time when most Americans were determined to go to war. And the life of this gentle and sympathetic man was brought to an end by bullets from an assassin's gun. Few men in public life have been more loved by the American people than McKinley, and few have had more devoted friends. It was not because of his deeds as president or even because of this tragic death by an assissin but simply because he was one of the most gentle, kindly, and considerate of men. He was naturally sociable and jovial, but because of his wife's ill health they led a very quiet life. During the years in the White House, enteraining was limited to state functions. He usually spent his evenings at home, reading poetry aloud while his wife crocheted. He had no hobbies and never, even as a child, engaged in sports, yet he was a delightful companion, full of fun and high spirits. McKinley was a short, stocky man. He carried himself stiffly erect, in an unconscious effort to increase his height. Some of the cartoonists of the day thought he resembled the French emperor Napoleon. He dressed with great care. A red carnation in the buttonhole of his coat and a spotless white linen vest were fresh every day.
