Hayes, nineteenth president of the United States, and Lucy W. Hayes. He was born on June 24, 1858 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rutherford attended Michigan State University and in 1880 graduated with a B.S. degree from Cornell University. Later he pursued postgraduate work at the Boston Institute of Technology. In 1882 he returned to Fremont, Ohio and immediately became associated with the Fremont Savings Bank. He became the cashier a few years later and carried the bank successfully through the Panic of 1893. On October 24, 1894, Mr. Hayes married Lucy Platt. She was the daughter of William A. Platt of Columbus, Ohio. They had three children, Rutherford Birchard, William Platt, and Birchard Platt. After leaving Ohio, Mr. Hayes resided for a short time in Chicago, Illinois where he organized library work and developed a traveling library, and then moved to Asheville, North Carolina. In that region he acquired large holdings of land, including a tract on Deaver View Mountain, and Falconhurst, a farm near the city. There he engaged in scientific farming on a large scale, using his valuable knowledge of soils to considerable advantage. Mr. Hayes was an active promoter of the western North Carolina Fair which was held at Asheville, and as president guided its activities for several years. He was also president of the Buckeye Water Co., and member of the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Building and Loan Association. He was active in the early development of Asheville as a resort and business center of western North Carolina and prominently connected with numerous projects there.

For further information about Mary Miller Hayes, see the Mary Miller Hayes Manuscript Collection (HAYES-5) Biographical Sketch Mary Miller Hayes, benefactress and daughter-in-law of President Rutherford B. Hayes, was born in Fremont, Ohio, on April 11, 1856, the oldest of Anson H. and Nancy (Otis) Millers three daughters. Her father was a cashier at Fremonts first bank, which was founded by Rutherford B. Hayes uncle, Sardis Birchard, and Lucius B. Otis. The bank eventually became the First National Bank, for which Miller served as president from 1904 until his death the following year. Mary Miller graduated from Fremont High School and attended a finishing school in the East. She first married in October 1894 Samuel Brinkerhoff, a justice of the peace and first vice president of First National Bank until his death in 1906. Brinkerhoff speculated in land throughout the Midwest. He was also president of Pemiscott Land and Cooperage in Missouri, a company that manufactured barrel staves. On Sept. 30, 1912, Mary Miller Brinkerhoff married Webb Cook Hayes, the second son of Rutherford B. and Lucy (Webb) Hayes. With him, she made frequent trips to spots around the world, including Alaska and Cuba, where they revisited the battlefields at which he was wounded during the Spanish-American War. She worked with the Red Cross in France in 1918 and later was librarian and hostess for wounded soldiers at Aix-le-Bains, France.

Extractions: My daughter Rebecca-Maria asked me for a list of 20 very good books of nature writing. I generally like to recommend books to specific people. For example, some people particularly like animals stories, some like outdoor adventure. A few people read nature poetry. Some are interested mostly in philosophical and moral problems, and some in politics. A few people enjoy reading about environmental blight and pollution, but most of us only read these types of problem oriented books out of professional or spiritual need to be informed and warned. I am most interested in writing which deals with the whole of nature in some region, and which has rather complex literary value. I have listed 23 authors and several books for some of them. You might start by looking to see which books are available on line, or in paperback. Extended Nature Prose Essays 1) Edward Abbey (1927 - 1989) Desert Solitaire. N.Y.: McGraw, 1968 This is the story of a season which he spent as a ranger in Arches National Park. It is full of philosophy and adventure. Abbey is funny and political and grumpy all at the same time. He also wrote novels, some of which are famous, but none of which are as good as this. He also wrote many more books of essays but this is the best and the most coherent collection. 2) Mary Hunter Austin (1868 - 1934) Land of Little Rain. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1903. Reprinted by Univ. of New Mexico Pr., Albuquerque 1974.
