   Extractions: 1786 she published Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson, during the last twenty years of his life, which was severely criticized by Boswell. She was ridiculed by " Peter Pindar " in Bozzy and Piozzi; os the British Biographers, A Town Eclogue (1786). But though Miss Burney and some others held aloof, the Piozzis found plenty of friends when they returned to London in 1787. Piozzi died at Brynbella, a villa he had built on. his wife’s Carnarvonshire estate in 1809, and Mrs Piozzi gave up her Welsh property to her husband’s son, and spent most of the rest of her life at Bath and Clifton. When long past seventy she took a fancy to William Augustus Conway, the actor. She retained her vivacity to the last, celebrating her 80th birthday by a ball to six or seven hundred people at Bath. She died at Clifton on the 2nd of May 1821. From 1776 to 1809 she kept a note-book which she called Thraliaria.” Her well-known poem of the “Three Warnings” ie to be found in many popular collections. Letters to and from the late Samuet Johnson appeared in 1788; Observations and Ryflections made in the course of a Journey, through France, Italy and (xermany, in I 789; and in 1801 she published Retrospection; or a review of the most striking and important events, characters, and situations which the last eighteen hundred years have presented to the view of mankind (I8of).

Born Hester Lynch Salusbury, she married Henry Thrale in 1763 and, following his death in 1781, she married an Italian musician, Gabriel Piozzi, in 1784. The collection contains over 150 letters from Hester to Samuel Johnson. She was born into a gentry family on 16 January 1741 at Bodvel, near Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire. In her childhood, her father, John Salusbury was sent to Nova Scotia on official business at the behest of his patron, Lord Halifax, the then President of the Board of Trade. Hester and her mother went to live with Sir Robert Salusbury Cotton at Lleweny Hall, Denbighshire, later moving to East Hyde, near Luton, and then to live with Sir Thomas Salusbury at Offley Hall, Herefordshire. Hester was a lively intelligent girl who learnt Latin and modern languages from her tutor, Dr Collier, and had published a paper in the before she was fifteen.

When she was dubbed Thrale rather than Piozzi, it was a given that one would mention her alongside Samuel Johnson and compare and contrast their productions and mutual influence. The Thrales' small salon was, after all, home to Johnson and was frequented by Edmund Burke, Frances and Charles Burney, David Garrick, Oliver Goldsmith, and Sir Joshua Reynolds, among others. To call Piozzi "Thrale," however, is to highlight the hostess and thus to miss a significant portion of her lifeparticularly her publishing life. Hester Lynch Piozzi has always been a literary historical figure of some renown. She might be added to the short list of eighteenth-century women writers who never really disappeared from view. Piozzi has attracted both longstanding and recent critical attention. Today's scholarship on Piozzi has been undertaken by some of the most respected researchers in the field. Nevertheless, Piozzi's position as an author has not been as secure as we might wish, in large part because her "recognition as a writer is not so certain . . . . Conventionally her writings have been valued as sidelights on Johnson or disesteemed as imitations of him; her very career as a writer has often been thought to be an accident produced by her association with him," as William McCarthy argues.

    Extractions: Hester Lynch Salusbury Thrale Piozzi Diaries Manuscript, 4 volumes, 1789, 1815, 1816, 1820 Best known by the name Mrs. Thrale, Hester Piozzi was a close friend of Samuel Johnson, who lived and traveled with the Thrales much of the time in his later years. Mrs. Piozzi, a prolific bluestocking writer whose works include Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson ...(1786), kept diaries over many years. Four of these, along with three written by her second husband, Gabriel Piozzi, are in the James Clifford Collection and are the only Piozzi diaries known to be in the United States. The entries for the week of July 3, 1815, are a typical reflection of Mrs. Piozzi's wide-ranging interests, including theater and world events: Edmund Kean's performance as Shylock and Napoleon's final abdication both appear in the entry on July 8; Monday's entry refers not to the weather but to Mrs. Piozzi's regular weekly analysis of her finances; "Laura" in the Sunday entry is the Laura Chapel in Bath, where Mrs. Piozzi regularly attended services. She and her husband left for the continent in September of that year. The published account of their travels appeared in 1789, and played a large part as establishing her as a well-known literary figure in her own right - as opposed to her previous role as a hostess to the London literary world. Her descriptions of Venice in Observations and Reflections provided the source for Ann Radcliffe's famous account of that city in her Gothic novel The Mysteries of Udolpho In her travel narrative, Piozzi reflects from time to time on travel itself, and on the process of translating topography into language; she notes, for example, the difficulty of avoiding suspicions of affectation when commenting on works of art. She considers the expectations and desires that govern her responses to the places that she visits, and often refers to the writings of other travellers, including those who have embarked on voyages to more exotic regions.
