Traveling To Jerusalem Pfeiffer, Ida (17971858) Ida Pfeiffer was born Ida Reyer in Vienna, Austria in 1797. She had five brothers and was raised like the boys by her father. Iceland and the Scandinavian North, by Madame Ida Pfeiffer, translated from German http://www.uscolo.edu/history/seminar/pfeiffer.htm
Extractions: Ida Pfeiffer was born Ida Reyer in Vienna, Austria in 1797. She had five brothers and was raised like the boys by her father. When she was twenty-two years old, she married a high-ranking official in Vienna; they had two sons. After her husband lost his job, she was forced to give piano and drawing lessons to help support the family. Her brothers helped pay for their son's education. In 1835, she separated from her husband, and by 1842 felt herself free to pursue travels she had dreamed about since a youth. Her first trip was to the Holy Land, and sales from the resulting travel diaries encouraged her to take other trips. She traveled to Iceland, South American, Africa, and Asia, recording her experiences for publication. Travelling by steamer, Ida left Vienna in March, 1842 for Constantinople. She would be there for about three weeks, and then venture on to Jerusalem and Sinai. She was in the Holy Land for several months, then went on to Cairo. She learned to ride a camel in order to go into the desert to see the Sphinx, the Great Pyramid at Giza, and the Valley of the Queens where the tomb of Queen Hatshepsut is located. She went to the Isthmus of Suez and began her journey home through Naples, Italy. She was gone for a little over ten months on this trip.

Extractions: The experiences of the four remarkable women travellers who are the subject of this article span a fascinating period of discovery and change in the Pacific region between 1768 and 1851. Forsaking conventional domesticity, they chose, for a variety of reasons, to undertake long and uncomfortable voyages by sailing ship across a hazardous ocean. Records of their remarkable ventures are to be found in the National Library's collections. Part of a Bay in Tahiti, South Seas c.1850 from the Pictorial Collection Baré proved herself an adept and courageous botaniser, and regularly went ashore with Commerson collecting specimens. Commerson (1727-73), whose achievements as a botanist have been greatly underrated, was generous towards his helper: he dedicated the plant genus Baretia to her (this includes a species with ambiguous sexual characteristics). In 1785, when Jeanne Baré was living quietly in the French countryside as Madame Dubernat, a widow, she was granted a government pension in recognition of her work as Commerson's assistant. Bougainville's regard for the 'indefatigable Baré' probably helped obtain this official largesse. The exact date of her death is unknown.
