It can be argued that Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) is the 'Godfather of Blog,' perhaps the Western world's most famous Diarist. But my question is: What ever happened to the Pepys surname? I never had any friends with the last name Pepys that I can recall. Even in my many travels to England and other Commonwealth countries, I have never come across anyone with the last name of Pepys. So here I am in Manhattan, and I decide to open up the phone book and see if there are any Pepys's listed. I mean, there are a lot of people (peeps!) crammed in New York City - it's a huge phone book. There has got to be maybe one or two Pepys's, right? WRONG! It skips from PEPSOSKI, Tracy straight to PEQUENO, P . Nary a Pepys in sight! So I think to myself, "Well, maybe those really old names somehow got phased out or changed over time." So I decide to look up the surname Shakespeare. Again - I've never personally known anyone with the last name Shakespeare, and it hails from roughly the same era in England as Pepys. So let's test the theory. I furiously flip through the Manhattan White Pages and I find NO LESS THAN 6 Shakespeares living in NYC! To wit:

    Extractions: The Complete Diary Hinchingbrooke House Samuel Pepys was born on February 23rd 1633 in Salisbury Court off Fleet Street. His father, John, was a tailor, his mother Margaret Kite was sister of a Whitechapel butcher and Samuel was fifth in a line of eleven children. By origin the Pepyses were country folk who, from the 13th century onwards had held land around Cottenham in Cambridgeshire, including the manor of Impington. In 1618 Paulina Pepys married a brother of the 1st Earl of Manchester, Sir Sydney Mountagu, who in 1627 had acquired the house and estate of Hinchingbrooke , near Huntingdon. Samuel was sent off to Huntingdonshire in 1642 to live with his uncle, Robert Pepys of Brampton, who served in the household of his relatives, the Mountagus of Hinchingbrooke. He moved to Brampton from London because of his health and fears of The Plague (from which several of his brothers died) and the house where he lived still stands between Brampton and Hinchingbrooke (see left).
