Australia Now - The Australian Currency philanthropist. The $10 note features the poets AB (Banjo) Paterson*(18641941) and Dame Mary Gilmore (1865-1962). This note http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/currency.html
Extractions: Home Travel Countries Global Issues ... Index Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of bank notes based on plastic (polymer). These notes provide much greater security against counterfeiting. They also last four times as long as conventional paper (fibrous) notes. The innovative technology by which the notes are produced, developed entirely in Australia, offers artists brilliant scope for the creation of images that reflect the histories and natural environments of their countries. At the same time the polymer notes are cleaner than paper notes and easily recyclable. Australias currency consists of coins of five, 10, 20 and 50 cent and one and two dollar denomination; and notes of five, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar denomination. Many forms of currency were used in the Australian colonies after the arrival of the first European settlers in 1788. In the rough early conditions barter was necessary, and payment in commodities like rum sometimes replaced money transactions. Some of the first official notes used in Australia were Police Fund Notes, issued by the Bank of New South Wales in 1816. After Federation in 1901, the date Australia became an independent nation, the federal government became responsible for the currency. The Australian Notes Act was passed in 1910. In 1913 the first series of Australian notes was issued, based on the old British system of twelve pence to a shilling, twenty shillings to a pound.

("Banjo") Paterson (1864-1941) Andrew Barton Paterson was born in New South Wales in 1864. After the publication of The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses in 1895, he became something of a literary celebrity in Australia. Paterson is best remembered as the author of Waltzing Matilda - Australia's unofficial national anthem. A film was made of his poem, The Man From Snowy River. Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) Henry Lawson was born on the goldfields in New South Wales on 17 June, 1867, the son of a Norwegian seaman and an activist for women's rights. Lawson suffered from deafness and was often teased as a result. He led a troubled life but is one of Australias best-known and loved early writers. There are many collections of his poems and short stories. Henry Handel Richardson (1870 1946) Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. Extractions: place an ad From top: Gough Whitlam, Banjo Paterson, Charles Perkins, Patrick White, Harry Seidler, Judith Wright, Henry Handel Richardson The inclusion of cricketer Shane Warne in the Herald's final list today of the 100 most influential Australians of the century will attract some controversy. Part 4: Essington Lewis to Kerry Packer Part 1: Faith Bandler to John Crawford By Tony Stephens If Bradman has, Warne will. Bradman was included because he was the outstanding cricketer anywhere in the world of any generation. Although many people will argue with Prime Minister John Howard's description of Sir Donald as the greatest living Australian, few will dispute his impact on the nation and anywhere cricket is played. He still receives letters from admirers in India, even though he never played there. A letter writer to the Herald yesterday described how he lifted the hearts and spirits of the nation during the Depression. Warne is included because of his impact on cricket on the nation and because cricket remains the national game. Wisden, the cricket bible, named Warne last year as the world's fourth top cricketer of the century, behind only Sir Donald, Sir Garfield Sobers, of the West Indies, and Sir Jack Hobbs, of England, and ahead of such notable players as Viv Richards. Warne revolutionised the game by reintroducing the art of leg spin bowling. His talents have brought new variety to the old game. He has even changed the relatively new game of limited-overs cricket, which had no place for leg spin until Warne came along.
