Extractions: The Anglo-American writer and political theorist Thomas Paine (1737-1809) boldly spoke out for social and political reforms, and played an active role in the American War of Independence. In his great and highly influential pamphlet Common Sense, published in January 1776, was the first bold, explicit assault on monarchical rule, and the first advocacy of the American colonies' independence from Britain. Written in clear language, Common Sense laid out how an independent government could be established and controlled by the people, and how rich and poor alike could share equally in privileges and duties. It was Paine's enlightened contention that in order to ensure liberty, no special preferments should be attached to any one religious sect, but that religious diversity should be respected.

The answer to this question is incredibly simple, because 200 years ago this great free-thinking philosopher had the courage to tell the truth in a country that was run by a handful of political and religious tyrants who were making sure the masses were kept in ignorance. However, the main reason why Thomas Paine has been written out of our corrupt history books, in a country where the Church and the state are still established, is because he did the same thing as Professor Richard Dawkins of Oxford University. He had the courage to question the supernatural absurdities contained in the Christian religion. Mainly that a book called the Bible is no more the word of the creator of the universe than any other book that has ever been published — a "crime" punishable by death in the 1700’s, and still against the law even today. The common law offence of blasphemous libel is still in place in the "free" country of Great Britain! This in spite of the fact that the Law Commission has strongly recommended that this antiquated law is abolished. "As you sow, so you will reap."

Thomas Paine (1737-1809), Anglo-American political philosopher, whose pamphlet Common Sense greatly influenced public opinion during the American Revolution. American Sojourn. Born on Jan. 29, 1737, in Thetford, Norfolk, England, he emigrated to Philadelphia in 1774, with introductions from Benjamin Franklin, who then represented the American colonies in Great Britain. Once there, he edited the Pennsylvania Magazine and published other writings. On Jan. 1, 1776, Common Sense appeared. In a dramatic, rhetorical style, it asserted that the American colonies received no advantage from their mother country, which was intent on exploiting them, and that every consideration of common sense called for the colonies to become independent of Great Britain and to establish a republican government of their own. Published anonymously, the pamphlet sold more than 500,000 copies and helped encourage the issuance of the Declaration of Independence half a year later. During the Revolution Paine wrote a series of pamphlets, entitled The American Crisis, that George Washington ordered read to his troops to improve their morale; the first of these opened with the famous words "These are the times that try men's souls." In 1778 Congress appointed Paine secretary of the committee of foreign affairs. After losing the post during a political dispute, he became clerk of the Pennsylvania legislature. Acknowledging that much of Paine's public service had been at his own expense, in 1785 Congress awarded him $3000 and New York State gave him a confiscated Royalist farm in New Rochelle.

Next Leaflet Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was the most remarkable political writer and radical thinker of the late 18th century; producing a series of influential pamphlets and books advocating political and social change which championed the rights of the common man. He played a prominent part in both the American and French Revolutions, although he was eventually outlawed in Britain, mainly because of his views on religion and the abolition of the monarchy. He had a great influence on later generations of people in the Humanist tradition, particularly through the two-volume biography of him of 1892 by Moncure Conway, after whom Conway Hall Humanist Centre in London is named. Thomas Paine coined what is, perhaps, the best short definition of Humanism: "My country is the world, my religion is to do good". However, in The Age of Reason he says "I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life". He also says, "My own mind is my own church". He saw god in nature but in no book or other 'revelation'. He specifically says in The Age of Reason that he disbelieves that the Bible and the Koran are 'the word of God'. So, Thomas Paine was neither an agnostic, nor an atheist, but a deist. Such a viewpoint essentially says that a god created the universe at the beginning of things and left the great world-machine to work out its own self-evolution according to natural law.

Extractions: Background note: The "citizen of the world," Thomas Paine rose from a lower class Quaker home in England to become one of the most influential radical minds of the late 18th century. After working as a corset maker his father's trade and as a tax collector, Paine emigrated to Philadelphia in 1774, and quickly immersed himself in revolutionary agitation. A naturally persuasive writer, his pamphlet, Common Sense (Philadelphia, 1776), became a siren call for American independence. In eminently clear, straightforward language, it outlined an argument for the superiority of republican government over a monarchy and demanded legal and political equality for all citizens. Furthermore, Paine asserted that his argument extended beyond the narrow conditions of colonial America, envisioning an international struggle for civil and human rights. Common Sense sold as many as 150,000 copies in 1776, and within a year, had been translated into French. Although clearly articulating a revolutionary positon, Paine was not enamored of the violence spawned by the Revolution. "I joined in the defense of America," he wrote after the war, "on the ground that a Country invaded is in the condition of a house broke into, and on no other principles than this, can a reflective mind, at least such as mine, justify war to itself" (1787 September 21). Yet Paine never wavered from the radical cause, writing consistently in support of independence and, later, taking part in the movement that produced the highly democratic constitution of the state of Pennsylvania.

He left school at thirteen and till eighteen worked at his father's trade of stay-making, when he went to sea in a privateer. In April, 1759, he settled at Sandwich as a master stay-maker, and in September of that year married. Not prospering he removed to Margate the next year and there soon after his wife died. In 1761 he entered the excise branch of the government service and remained there till 1774, with the exception of a couple of years when, probably owing to his lax conduct, he was out of the service. He was restored but again dismissed, and finally, on the charge of smuggling. In 1771 he married Elizabeth Ollive, daughter of his landlord. In 1772 he wrote a small pamphlet, The Case of the Officers of Excise; with Remarks on the Qualifications of Officers, and on the numerous Evils arising to the Revenue, from the Insufficiency of the present Salary: humbly addressed to the Members of both Houses of Parliament . It was the first public exhibit on of his power as a writer, but it gave offense to the upper officials and probably was the occasion of his dismissal on a trumped-up charge. Shortly after this he and his wife were formally separated.

This simple quotation from Thomas Paine's The Crisis not only describes the beginnings of the American Revolution, but also the life of Paine himself. Throughout most of his life, he was a failure, living off the gratitude and generosity of others, but his writings helped inspire a nation. He communicated the ideas of the Revolution to common farmers as easily as to intellectuals, creating prose that stirred the hearts of the fledgling United States. He had a grand vision for society: he was staunchly anti-slavery, and he was one of the first to advocate a world peace organization and social security for the poor and elderly. But his radical views on religion would destroy his success, and by the end of his life, only a handful of people attended his funeral. On a January day in 1737, Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England. His father, a corseter, had grand visions for his son, but by the age of 12, Thomas had failed out of school. The young Paine began apprenticing for his father, but again, he failed. So, now age 19, Paine went to sea. This adventure didn't last too long, and by 1768 he found himself as an excise (tax) officer in England.
