Extractions: Duke University Press 2001 (378 pp) What a rare and timely book this is! It provides a glimpse into the inner thought processes of Sir William Osler (1849-1919) during his long and distinguished career as a physician clinician and professor at McGill University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Johns Hopkins University, and finally, as the Regius Chair in Medicine at Oxford University. Osler wrote 1,158 medical publications, and 182 literary papers and essays in his lifetime, including his famous medical text, The Principles and Practice of Medicine . Osler, born in Ontario, Canada, was the youngest son of Reverend Featherstone Lake Osler and Ellen Frees eight children. Osler first determined to be a clergyman, but later abandoned the idea to become a physician. The interweaving in his life of religion and science are exemplified in the titles of the twenty essays presented in the book, e.g., "A Way of Life," "Aequanimitas," "The Leaven of Science," "Chauvinism in Medicine," and "Mans Redemption of Man." Oslers essays vividly describe the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries of medicine, which he helped shapea world that has powerfully shaped our own world as emergency physicians working the dawn of the 21st century. The addresses provide powerful insights as to how the world of medicine became what it is today. Yesterdays solutions are todays problems. An understanding of our Oslerian past can help us untangle meaning in the present and set direction for the future.

Hier soll er mit ein paar Fotos und ein paar Daten aus seinem Leben auf dieser Seite geehrt und gewürdigt werden. William Osler Am Ende seines Lebens (1919) war William Osler wahrscheinlich die herausragendste, bekannteste und einflußreichste Persönlichkeit in der Medizin. Bei der Lektüre seiner Biographie scheint es unvorstellbar, daß ein Menschenleben ausreichend für ein solch reiches Schaffen, wie das von William Oster sein kann. Heiterkeit, Großzügigkeit und Menschenliebe dürften wohl die hervorstechendsten Charaktermerkmale dieses Mannes gewesen sein. Der berühmte amerikanische Gehirnchirurg H. Cushing beschreibt ihn in seinem 2bändigen Werk "The Life of Sir William Osler" mit Worten, die den Wunsch aufkommen lassen, diesem Mann einmal persönlich begegnet zu sein - "A man with a cultivated peace of mind, serenity - the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius". Geboren wurde William Osler am 19. Juli 1849 in Bond Head, Kanada. 1868 begann er sein Medizinstudium in Toronto, das er an der McGill Medical School in Montreal fortsetzte, wo er 1872 graduierte. In seinem anschließenden zweijährigen Europaaufenthalt durchstreifte er die Krankenhäuser von London, Berlin und Wien und traf unter anderem auch mit Jenner zusammen. Besonders in seiner Londoner Zeit konnte er seiner Liebe zur Histologie, Physiologie und experimentellen Pathologie nachgehen. Er studierte dort nicht nur die antagonistische Wirkung von Atropin und Physostigmin auf die weißen Blutzellen, sondern beobachtete auch als erster im zirkulierenden Blut Korpuskeln, die vom ihm als "blood platelets" bezeichnet wurden. Die sorgfältige Beschreibung dieses Phänomens führte dazu, daß seine Studien 1874 der Royal Society präsentiert wurden (Proceedings, vol. XXII; 1874, S. 391ff.)

Extractions: Osler usque ad mare: the SS William Osler CMAJ Abstract William Osler's connections with the sea included a strong family history of seafaring, his own transatlantic crossings (of which there were at least 32) and the occasional use of nautical imagery in his inspirational writings. An unusual Oslerian connection with the sea emerged after his death in the form of a World War II Liberty ship. Through the SS William Osler and its sister ships, Osler was symbolically reunited with colleagues associated with the early days of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The William Osler circumnavigated the globe in 1943 without engaging the enemy. She was then converted into an army hospital ship and renamed the USHS Wisteria Among the few facets of William Osler's life to escape extensive scrutiny has been his connection with the sea. Born in a country that proudly bears the motto A mari usque ad mare The Voyage , an epic poem that, along with his Life of Lord Exmouth , a biography of a Cornish admiral, was avidly read in the Osler home in Bond Head, Ont. Osler's father, Featherstone, spent 10 years at sea in the Royal Navy, endured several maritime near-disasters and was nearly shipwrecked on the voyage that brought him and his new bride to Canada. Such associations may have prompted William Osler, when made a baronet in 1911, to choose waves for the field on his coat of arms. Osler himself spent a great deal of time at sea. Considered the "father of internal medicine," Osler’s career spanned nearly forty-five years at McGill University (1875-84), the University of Pennsylvania (1884-89), Johns Hopkins University (1889-1904), and Oxford (1905-1919), where he was knighted in 1911.
