For a lady, the angle of the heel often forced her to require a cane ( or a gentleman on her are ) to keep from falling. The intricate embroidery and rhinestone buckle show the wealth and opulence of the French Court where such shoes were worn." Price: Baroness Just The Right Shoe Step Into History Item # 25085

Extractions: COMPLETED! Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins was one of the first African Americans to publish a story with mystery and detection elements. The question of identity is crucial throughout this fast-paced melodrama, and almost no one is who or what they seem. Racial identity is shown as the underpining to personal identity; and whether someone is black or white utterly changes lives. The Negro maid, Venus Johnson, who does most of the actual detecting in the latter part of the book, is the earliest known black detective in fiction. Hopkins stresses Johnson's courage, resourcefulness, and above all, her intelligence. Kirsteen: The Story of a Scotch Family Seventy Years Ago COMPLETED! Margaret Oliphant and her protagonist Kirsteen had a number of experiences in common: the main one being that they each worked hard and supported other family members with little appreciation. Kirsteen's options, as a Scotswoman from an old but poor family, appear to be unpaid drudgery at home, or a loveless marriage. Rejecting both, Kirsteen escapes to London where she becomes, not Cinderella, but Cinderella's dressmaker. Though looked down upon by her family for choosing to work, and 'not having a man', Kirsteen becomes independent and financially stable in the life she makes for herself. Kirsteen is a startlingly modern novel in its treatment of women and work.

Extractions: That damned elusive Pimpernel?" After a month-long tidal wave of intriguing press releases culminated by last Thursday's (9/04) sneak press preview at a Lincoln Center rehearsal hall of what director Peter Hunt (of 1776 fame) describes as a work in progress, I can only paraphrase its author, the Baroness Orczy's quote: We hear about him here, we read about him there, At this "work-in-progress"stage, it's too soon to tell. What I can tell you is that it's a big (36 member cast) show with an adaptation by Nan Knighton (book and lyrics) which promises to hone closely to the original story line. That means a historical romance of intrigue and derring-do that brings to mind
