Extractions: - ALL - Mayor/City Council City Services Environment Transportation Business Services Recreation Jobs Public Safety Visitor Information (February 21, 2002) Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez announced on February 13 that the National Atomic Museum would be moving from Kirtland Air Force Base to a property in the Old Town area at 1905 Mountain Road NW, as a temporary exhibition site. In an effort that was lead by Mayor Chavez , the former REI location, owned by American Properties, was made available and leased to the museum as another way to encourage tourist traffic in the Old Town corridor. "This museum is a part of New Mexico history," Mayor Chavez said. "This is America's only official museum resource for the history and science of atomic energy and I encouraged the relocation to make this heritage more accessible to the general public". The National Atomic Museum owned by the Department of Energy and operated by Sandia National Laboratories, has been closed to the general public since the September terrorist attacks. The museum plans to be open at the new location in time for the upcoming tourist season in early May. The museum was first opened in 1969 and chartered by Congress in 1991. Jim Long, President of American Properties, said that he was interested in working with Sandia National Laboratories and the National Atomic Museum Foundation to use the old REI building as a way to promote the culture and heritage of the State of New Mexico and feels that, with the addition of the National Atomic Museum, we will have created the strongest museum corridor in the state.

After hearing my ideas on the Transportation Academy, the Albuquerque Aerospace Museum, and Thunderbird Plaza , Jim gave me his candid observations. Transportation Academy Bingo . This one out of the three is a winner . We should be able to ride on the coat tails of the National Atomic Museum, the Wheels Museum, and the new Balloon Fiesta Park Museum. Now, we have to get advisors from Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute and New Mexico State University Preface Let's try to make a wholesome difference in the world. President John Kennedy gave America a goal of putting a man on the Moon and we did it. I propose we adapt the goal of providing transportation that emits zero pollution. We can do it.

Extractions: Albuquerque is an intriguing combination of old and new, where the glories of nature surround an exciting modern city. It was a once a frontier community and there is still plenty of evidence of this in the Old Town where shops and galleries are housed in historic adobe buildings, set among patios and winding paths. The area is considered to be Albuquerque's soul, at the hub of its history, culture, and community life. This is also a highly cosmopolitan city boasting diverse cultures and cuisines, pursuits, and panoramas. There are plenty of museums and galleries to visit if you want to stay in town, but a drive along the Crest National Scenic Byway to the summit of the Sandia Mountains is extremely picturesque, as is the breathtaking scenery found in places like the Petroglyph National Monument and Coronado State Monument. You can even walk along the cottonwood-lined river at the Rio Grande Nature Center, where two miles of trails wind through wooded areas to the sandy banks of the Rio Grande River.

Go On Energy Field Trips With Energy Ant It is no surprise that the National Atomic Museum is in New also the home of Los AlamosNational Laboratory, where and much more on the grounds of the Museum. http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/EnergyAntTrips/
Extractions: What is Energy Kid's Corner Milestones Energy Quiz ... About Energy Ant and Us A Report From Energy Ant - How I Spent Last Summer!!! I had a very busy and exciting summer in 2001! I spent two weeks with teachers from across the country learning about energy. The teachers took a number of field trips, so I got to see so much (from an "ant's-eye view," of course). Here are some of the trip highlights: The National Atomic Museum has great resources and exhibits about the United States' use of nuclear energy for all kinds of things. It is no surprise that the National Atomic Museum is in New Mexico, because this state is also the home of Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the U.S. developed the first nuclear weapon. This museum takes you on a tour through the development of nuclear weapons to today's use of nuclear power - power released from the nucleus of an atom - to generate electricity to heat and cool our homes, make our lamps and home computers work and more. Nuclear power provides many things to the United States and other countries around the world - from nuclear medicine to devices to test bridges for structural integrity - harnessing the power of the atom was one of the biggest discoveries of the last 100 years.
