Extractions: The toss of a coin kept Leon Smith from boarding the Enola Gay on its infamous flight Aug. 6, 1945, to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. "That's how close I was to the flight that put a virtual end to the war," said the former "weaponeer." Smith was one of the nuclear pioneers who gathered in April 1998 at the National Atomic Museum at Kirtland Air Force Base to talk about the U.S. atomic-bomb testing era. Behind Smith is the museum's replica of the "Fat Man," the second and last atomic bomb used in war, dropped on Nagasaki three days after the Hiroshima mission.
