    Extractions: The following membership information is provided courtesy of Jim Selig. The Skidler Benevolent Association was an organization of New York immigrants from Skidel. Members of the Benevolent Association supported each other, purchased burial plots, and met regularly. The Association met from 1900 until 1974. This time the researcher was fortunate in finding a booklet of the 50th anniversary celebration with the names of the membership printed on several pages permitting photocopying and eliminating the grubby business of going through ledgers to locate names. Unfortunately the first names are initials. If you suspect that a name is a close relative I might be able to supply you with the 1950 address [ jselig3460@aol.com ]. Some names from a ledger will be added after the anniversary list. The spelling of these names which were entered in cursive script are to be considered suspect. The YIVO professionals are cooperative and patient librarians and archivists who allow me to take up so much of their valuable time. This time I would like to cite the estimable Yeshaya Metal, a scholar and Yiddishist who obligingly allows me to take him on wild goose searches deciphering idiosyncratic Yiddish cursive writing and translating from the Yiddish where necessary.     Extractions: Increasing attention is being paid to issues of human heredity as a result of the Human Genome Project (HGP) with its mandate to analyze all human DNA. The H.G.P. has kindled renewed interest in the possibility of amending our genetic legacy through preventive reproductive strategies, and perhaps eliminating certain diseases or disabilities that may be genetically linked. As a consequence, there is a renewed awareness of earlier attempts to manipulate heredity during the first quarter of this century under the aegis of the eugenics movement. A second factor has also contributed to the resurgence of interest in eugenics. New work on the history of the Holocaust has followed the opening of previously secret archives of the Nazi era in the former East Germany and Soviet Russia. The wave of memorials marking the 5Oth anniversary of the end of World War II, the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the prosecution of Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg tribunals have also added to the interest in study of the so-called "scientific racism" that characterized the Nazi regime. In an attempt to provide a thorough list of reference sources on the historyof the eugenics movement in America, this bibliography lists many classic works from the "heyday" of eugenical thought (approximately 1900 to 1935) as well as most of the important secondary works that have appeared in the last thirty-five years.

Bess refused.
