Instead of having careers, women married young and stayed home to raise their children. But Maud dreamed of another kind of life. She wanted to be an author, even though almost all writers of the time were men. Maud faced many obstacles, but she eventually succeeded. In her lifetime, she wrote 24 books, 530 short stories and more than 500 poems. Her most famous book, Anne of Green Gables , has been published in over 20 languages and has sold tens of millions of copies around the world.

The main character is a spirited, orphan girl, who finds home with an elderly brother and sister. Montgomery produced more than 20 novels and other books. Anne of Green Gables was rejected by several publisher. Montgomery was 34 when it was finally accepted. "I'm pretty hungry this morning," she announced, as she slipped into the chair Marilla placed for her. "The world doesn't seem such a howling wilderness as it did last night. I'm so glad it's a sunshiny morning. But I like rainy mornings real well too. All sorts of mornings are interesting, don't you think? You don't know what's going to happen through the day, and there's so much scope for imagination." (from Anne of Green Gables Lucy Maud Montgomery was born at Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island. When she was two, her mother died of tuberculosis. Her father, who was a merchant, remarried, and moved away. Montgomery was raised by her maternal grandparents in Cavendish. The place was isolated and her childhood was not so happy: she grew up in an atmosphere of strict discipline and punishments for slight reasons. She joined her father briefly in Prince Albert, but then returned to Prince Edward Island. At an early age Montgomery read widely. She started to write in school and had her first poem published in a local paper at the age of fifteen. In 1895 Montgomery qualified for a teacher's licence at Prince Wales College, Charlottetown. During the 1890s she worked as a teacher in Bideford and at Lower Bedeque, both on Prince Edward Island.

Extractions: L. M. (Lucy Maud) Montgomery was born in Clifton, P.E.I., Canada in 1874. During her lifetime she wrote 23 books of fiction , one book of poetry , a book on courageous women, an autobiography, a life's worth of journals (of 5,000 pages), 450 poems and over 500 short stories . Of these contributions, her career is best known for giving Canadians (and the world) a beloved literary heroine, Anne of Green Gables , an imaginative, short-tempered, loving red-headed orphan in search of a home. After the death of her mother in her early youth, her father left her in the care of her stern grandparents. Montgomery's refuge from loneliness was in her imagination, much like many of the heroines she was later to create. She was a storyteller from her early youth. "I cannot remember when I was not writing, or when I did not mean to be an author. To write has always been my central purpose toward which every effort and hope and ambition of my life has grouped itself." During a short period where she lived with her father in Alberta, she published her first poem in a local newspaper at the age of 15. She soon returned to Prince Edward Island to finish her schooling. After completing college, she had a short stint as a journalist, and then began to teach. In spite of a tumultuous love life during this period, her writing never quelled. In 1902 she began a lifelong correspondence with Ephraim Weber, a man with literary ambitions, and in 1903 she began writing to a second pen-pal, George Boyd Macmillan of Scotland.
