    Extractions: Brtish writer Sommerset Maugham , who admired the honesty of the working people but who sought the luxury of the rich, served as a spy for England during World War I, and a reluctant one, at that. Planning to become a physician, Maugham worked as an intern while reading onmnivorously. He kept a "writer's notebook," about what he termed "life in the raw," particularly in the slums of Lambeth where he worked briefly as an obstetric clerk. That career was abandoned when, in 1897, Maugham published a very successful novel. Liza of Lambeth , a book he wrote more for his own amusement than with any thoughts of enriching himself. It accurately and sympathetically portrayed "the low life" of Lambeth, drawn from his own experiences, and was, as the French term it, a success de scandal . Riches flowed from this work, so much so that Maugham decided on a full-time writing career. He did not write successful novels but well-received plays and also short stories. In 1915, Maugham published what was later heralded as his masterpiece (and would eventually sell more than 10 million copies
