The Malthusian doctrine, as stated in "Essay on the Principle of Population," was expressed as follows: "population increases in a geometric ratio, while the means of subsistence increases in an arithmetic ratio." Well, that seems plain enough, and perfectly understandable if there is too many people and not enough food, then, certainly, there is going to be problems. Malthus developed his theory, at least to this extent: that left alone, no matter all the problems short of world wide catastrophe, humankind will survive, as, nature has a natural way to cut population levels: "crime, disease, war, and vice," being, the necessary checks on population." This proposition, as was made by Malthus in 1798, was to cause quite a public stir, then, and yet today.

Der erwachsene Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) erteilte diesem Credo eine entschiedene Absage: Immer mehr Mäuler stopfen zu müssen bedeute eine erhebliche Belastung für die Gesellschaft. In seinem 1798 veröffentlichten Essay on the Principle of Population - in deutscher Übertragung: Das Bevölkerungsgesetz - stellte er die These auf, dass Bevölkerungsentwicklung und Nahrungsmittelproduktion naturgesetzlich auseinanderklafften. Während sich die landwirtschaftliche Produktion nur linear erhöhen lasse, verdoppele sich die Bevölkerungszahl in nur 25 Jahren.

Extractions: Your Contacts at Dixson Library The Dixson Library will play a small but significant part in a national conference being held in Canberra in September. Entitled 'Malthus and his legacy: 200 years of the population debate', the conference will examine the impact of the British economist, Thomas Malthus (1766-1834), on population thinking from the late 18th to the 21st century. The Dixson Library's contribution will be the appearance, in a public exhibition organised by the National Library, of an original letter penned by Malthus in 1825. The letter was donated to the Dixson Library by a member of the UNE Economics Department, Associate Professor John Pullen, who acquired it in 1985 in the course of his research into Malthus.
