    Extractions: Amy Lowell (1874-1925) Contributing Editor: Lillian Faderman I generally use Amy Lowell's work to explore two major issues: the imagist movement as it was imported into the United States and the treatment of lesbian material by a lesbian poet who felt the need to be more closeted in her writing than in her life. While the subject of Lowell's imagism is easy to introduce, the subject of homosexuality in her life and writing has been more difficult because students are sometimes uncomfortable with the topic, and they are ignorant of the history of censorship and homophobia in the United States. The study of Lowell's life and work presents a good opportunity to open these important subjects to discussion. Lowell's lesbianism and the ways in which it is manifested in her writing generally stimulate some of the liveliest discussions of the course. For example, some students question, as did the critics who dampened her popularity in the years immediately after her death, whether a writer who is homosexual can have anything significant to say to the heterosexual majority. My approach is to draw an analogy (or, with any luck, to have students in the class draw the analogy) to the profound impact on white readers of works by writers of color. "Differentness" becomes the theme of the discussion. This preliminary discussion of ethnic and racial difference and its impact on writing and reading leads to a discussion of sexual difference and its parallel impact. Either members of the class or I will bring up other writers with whom most of the class may be familiar and whose work they considered no less effective because those writers were gay or lesbian (for example

A girl of the upper classes was generally not permitted by her family to go off to the university as her brothers did, and so Lowell’s education consisted primarily of tutors, access to her father’s vast library, and travel in Europe. As she later wrote to the poet Archibald MacLeish in response to his inquiry, her formal education “really did not amount to a hill of beans.” She evinced an interest in literature when very young, and her first writing was published when she was eleven years old. While the diaries she kept as an adolescent suggest an early bisexuality, as she matured she became less interested in men and looked for love and companionship with other women. Her fascination with the theater led to her involvement for a time with the musical starlet Lina Abarbanell. It also led her to her first muse, the tragedian Eleonora Duse, whom she saw on stage for the first time in 1902. Duse’s talent and beauty inspired Lowell, already twenty-eight years old, to revive her youthful interest in writing. Lowell later recalled the momentous effect of watching Duse perform: “It loosed a bolt in my brain and I knew where my true function lay.” Her first poem since her juvenilia was addressed to the actress and marked the beginning of Lowell’s career as a writer, although she did not publish her first book

She lived her later years in a "Boston marriage" and wrote erotic love poems addressed to a woman. T. S. Eliot called her the "demon saleswoman of poetry." Of herself, she said, "God made me a businesswoman and I made myself a poet." Amy Lowell was born to wealth and prominence. Her paternal grandfather, John Amory Lowell, developed the cotton industry of Massachusetts with her maternal grandfather, Abbott Lawrence. The towns of Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts, are named for the families. John Amory Lowell's cousin was the poet James Russell Lowell. Amy was the youngest child of five. Her eldest brother, Percival Lowell, became an astronomer in his late 30's and founded Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. He discovered the "canals" of Mars. Earlier he'd written two books inspired by his travels to Japan and the Far East. Amy Lowell's other brother, Abbott Lawrence Lowell, became president of Harvard University. The family home was called "Sevenels" for the "Seven L's" or Lowells. Amy Lawrence was educated there by an English governess until 1883, when she was sent to a series of private schools. She was far from a model student. During vacations, she traveled with her family to Europe and to America's west.

She was educated in private schools and by her mother, and until she was 28 she did little but alternately live at home, where she enjoyed the life of a Boston socialite, and travel abroad. About 1902 she decided to devote her energies to poetry. It was eight years before her first piece, a conventional but not undistinguished sonnet, was published in Atlantic Monthly, and two more before her first volume, A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass (1912), appeared. On a visit to England in 1913 she met Ezra Pound and discovered his circle, the Imagists. He included one of Lowell's poems in his anthology Des Imagistes (1914), and in that year she published her second book, Sword Blades and Poppy Seed, which includes her first experimentation with free verse and "polyphonic prose."
