Biography Missionary; born, 1813; sent by London Missionary Society to South Africa, 1840; began well-known four year, six thousand mile journey, 1852; led expedition of Zambezi region which included discovery of Victoria Falls, 1857; died, 1873. Scope and Content Letter written by Livingstone to John Kirk laying down some of the conditions of an expedition they were planning to Africa. Missionary travels, Devon and Exeter Institution Library: G28.27 Livingstone (1813-1873) was one of the greatest European explorers of Africa. He worked as a missionary from 1840 but was a keen scientific observer and by living closely with the African peoples gained a deep insight into the nature of their cultures. He was the first European to see the Victoria Falls and on an expedition to discover the source of the Nile was found by Stanley at Ujiji in 1868. His travels were eagerly followed in England and encouraged other explorers, missionaries and colonisers. Return to the top of the page here.

Extractions: Scottish Explorer David Livingstone Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was one of the greatest explorers of the African continent, along the way pioneering the abolition of the slave trade. When no one had heard from him for several years while he was exploring the interior of the continent in the 1860s, his long absence became a matter of international concern, and the New York Herald sent explorer Henry M. Stanley to find him in 1869. Stanley finally found Livingstone in November 1871 in a small town on Lake Tanganyika. He greeted Livingstone with the famous words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Few Europeans have contributed as much to the exploration of Africa as the gentle Scottish missionary named David Livingstone. Livingstone was a curious combination of missionary, doctor, explorer, scientist and anti-slavery activist. He spent 30 years in Africa, exploring almost a third of the continent, from its southern tip almost to the equator. He was the first white man to see Victoria Falls and though he never discovered the source of the Nile, one of his goals, he eliminated some possibilities and thereby helped direct the efforts of others. In 1865, at age 52, Livingstone set out on his last and most famous journey. He soon lost his medicine, animals and porters, but struggled on almost alone.

In addition to adding greatly to Europes knowledge of the continents geography, he heightened Western awareness of Africa and stimulated Christian missionary activity there. His activities helped bring about the Scramble for Africa, in which European powers seized virtually all of Africa in the late 19th century and early 20th century. One of the mapping sketches by Livingstone Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland, to religious, working-class parents. At age ten he began working in the local cotton mill, with long hours and meager pay. He read and studied diligently when not at work and in 1836 entered Andersons College (now the University of Strathclyde) in Glasgow. Theology and medicine were his primary interests. In 1838 the London Missionary Society accepted him as a candidate, and two years later he received a medical degree from the University of Glasgow. The First Opium War (1839-1843) between Britain and China ruined his hopes of becoming a medical missionary to China, but the missionary society arranged a new placement for him in southern Africa. former British Counsel building in Stone Town, Zanzibar

Extractions: In the fall of 1838 David had been accepted by the London Missionary Society. It seemed a dream to the 25-year-old former cotton-mill laborer. But it would take determination. He was no missionary yet. He was beginning three months of probation. He had to master Latin, Greek and theology before he began more medical training. But after several weeks David was worried. Reverend Cecil, mentor of new recruits, didn't seem to recognize David's better qualities, as others had. He grudgingly admitted David's theology was simple but sound. But the reverend frowned all the while David labored on Latin and Greek. He even questioned David's motivation, even though every time David was called upon to lead prayer he concluded, 'Let us imitate Christ in all his inimitable perfections.' There was another qualification to become a missionary. Every missionary had to preach the Gospel. Each student had to write his sermon, then subject it to Reverend Cecil's severe review. After the reverend's inevitable revisions the student memorized the approved sermon, then delivered it passionately to a local congregation. David's opportunity came when the minister at a church in Stanford Rivers became ill. David was told to deliver the evening sermon. He read through his approved sermon one last time and mounted the podium.

Fra da av bestemte han seg for å overgi seg fullt og helt til Gud. En gang hørte han en preken av Robert Moffatt, en misjonær fra Sør-Afrika. Han fortalte om arbeidet på misjonsstasjonen. Men han fortalte også at tidlig om morgenen, når det var klart vær, kunne han se røyken fra tusen landsbyer stige mot himmelen. Disse landsbyene lå langt inne i jungelen, og ingen hadde nådd de med evangeliet. Dette brente seg fast i Livingstone. Hans visjon var å bli en stifinner for evangeliet i det ukjente og unådde Afrika. Forberedelsene Forberedelsene startet. Han studerte til lege for å kunne hjelpe de innfødte. Videre gikk han i prekenlære, men her strøk han. Da han skulle framføre den prekenen han hadde øvd på, fikk han helt jernteppe. Han leste teksten og gikk deretter ned fra prekestolen. Han ble ikke godkjent som misjonær i første runde, men etter en ny sjanse greide han så vidt å bestå testen. Den 8. desember 1840 la seilskipet George ut fra England med kursen mot Sør-Afrika.
