Nach der Absolvierung der Lateinschule in Kamenz verbrachte Lessing 5 Jahre im St. Afra Internat in Meißen. Seine poetischen Versuche reichen bis in diese Zeit. Von 1746-1748 studierte Lessing in Leipzig, zuerst Theologie danach Medizin. Der Journalist Christlob Mylius ebnete die Wege zur Veröffentlichung erster Gedichte: Fabeln und anakreontischer Lieder. In den Berliner Jahren 1748-1755, die nur durch ein Studium unterbrochen waren, führte Lessing das Leben eines freien Schriftstellers. Als Journalist und Literaturkritiker machte er sich durch seine Unabhängigkeit in Leipzig und Zürich einen Namen. Lessing setzte Maßstäbe in der Dramenkritik. Es kam auch eine neue Theaterzeitschrift heraus. Abschiedslos reiste Lessing 1750 aus Berlin, um "mehr unter Menschen als unter Büchern zu leben". Dort waren das Offizierskasino, Wirtshaus, Theater, der Spieltisch Lessings Welt. Das letzte Jahrzehnt, vom Mai 1770 an, verbrachte Lessing in Wolfenbüttel als Leiter der berühmten herzöglichen Bibliothek. Seine Lebensverhältnisse waren eingeschränkt und über die Vereinsamung halfen ihm Reisen (Wien, Italien), Besuch bedeutender Belehrter sowie der Braunschweiger Freundeskreis um Johann Joachim.

Als Dramatiker und Kritiker war er einer der führenden Vertreter der Aufklärung innerhalb der deutschen Literatur. Lessing wurde am 22. Januar 1729 als Sohn eines Pfarrers im sächsischen Kamenz geboren und studierte Theologie, Philosophie und Medizin in Leipzig und Wittenberg. Während des Studiums in Leipzig verfasste er mit Der junge Gelehrte (1748) sein erstes Drama. Zwischen 1748 und 1755 lebte er vorwiegend in Berlin, wo er Mitherausgeber der Beyträge zur Historie und Aufnahme des Theaters und Mitarbeiter an der Berlinischen Privilegierten Zeitung war, der späteren Vossischen Zeitung. Nachdem er in der Zwischenzeit in Wittenberg die Magisterwürde erhalten hatte, betätigte er sich in Berlin als erfolgreicher und angesehener Theater- und Literaturkritiker. Da im zersplitterten Deutschland eine solche "natürliche Ordung" auf politischem Wege nicht zu erreichen ist, soll - nach den Vorstellungen der deutschen Aufklärer - das Bürgertum eine gerechtere Ordnung durch sein sittlich-moralisches Vorbild erreichen: Die Herrschenden sollen beschämt sein und sich im bürgerlichen Sinne "bessern". Auf diese Weise soll auch die politische Zersplitterung durch eine geistige "Kultur-Nation" überwunden werden. Um dieseZiel zu erreichen, muß allerdings erst noch ein solcher "idealer und vorbildlicher Bürger" geschaffen werden. Diese Aufgabe hat v.a. die Literatur zu übernehmen.

Robertson, Introductory Note "The Education of the Human Race" is the culmination of a bitter theological controversy which began with the publication by Lessing, in 1774 1778, of a series of fragments of a work on natural religion by the German deist, Reimarus. Goeze, and in the battle that followed Lessing did his great work for the liberalizing of religious thought in Germany. The present treatise is an extraordinarily condensed statement of the author's attitude towards the fundamental questions of religion, and gives his view of the signification of the previous religious history of mankind, along with his faith and hope for the future. As originally issued, the essay purported to be merely edited by Lessing; but there is no longer any doubt as to his having been its author.
