Extractions: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Hamburgische Dramaturgie , a series of criticisms of plays and players, was undertaken in furtherance of the attempt to establish at Hamburg the first national German theatre. While the theatrical enterprise proved abortive, the Dramaturgie established the principle upon which the future of the stage in all countries depends, that for dramatic art the immediate theatrical public is no competent court of appeal. But the direct and most important effect of the Dramaturgie was to complete the task which Lessing had begun in previous writings, and that was to overthrow the dominion of the arbitrary French rules and French models established by Gottsched. Lessing vindicated its real laws to the drama, made clear the difference between the Greeks and their would-be successors, and established the claims of Shakespeare as the modern master of both tragedy and comedy. His own dramatic efforts were cautious and tentative, but progressive, opposing the realism of the English domestic drama to the artificiality of the French, while holding a judicious mean between English and French examples. During the whole of the seventeenth century and the earlier part of the eighteenth, the literary history of Germany may almost be compared to a desert, and in the annals of no other modern nation shall we find such a long period of barrenness. The chief diversion is the animated controversy between the school of the pedantic Gottsched, who ruled at Leipsic, and the partisans of Bodmer, who at Zurich brought out from obscurity the long-neglected

As was a frequent custom in clergymen's families, his father looked after his early education, later sending him to a famous school at Meissen. So apt a pupil was young Lessing that at 16 he was ready for the University of Leipzig. At the university he studied theology, then medicine, and later literature and philosophy. But already he had made a connection with the stage through translating French plays for Frau Neuber's theater. In 1748 Frau Neuber put on Lessing's own maiden effort, Der Junge Gelehrte . From that time on, regardless of his financial fortunes, Lessing gave his entire interest to some form of writing. For a time he was employed in making translations by Voltaire , who was at this time living in Germany. This contact, however, soon ended in disagreement, according to some authorities, because Lessing betrayed a literary confidence of Voltaire's.

Email Us GOTTHOLD EPHRAIM LESSING (1729-1781) G OTTHOLD Ephraim Lessing's name belongs to the very first rank among writers for and about the theater. He was born in a Luteran clergyman's family, and began very early to show his interest in the stage, having written a comedy before he was seventeen. He came under the notice of Voltaire , who employed him in making translations. During several years Lessing was one of the contributors to Madame Neuber's Leipzig theater; but his dramatic principles, as they defined themselves, became more and more opposed both to those of Voltaire and the Leipzig school. His first important play, Miss Sara Sampson (1755) was not at all suited to the tastes of the pseudo-classicists. In 1767 Lessing became associated with a group of actors in Hamburg, at which place he wrote the justly celebrated Hamburg Dramaturgy , in which he explained to the world the principles underlying the art of the theater. The great event of the year 1767, however, was the production of his

Extractions: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was born in Kamenz in 1729. At 19 he was a successful play write, but his father's words of warning appeared to be coming true : Don't lay your heart on the stage, my son! It will not bring abundance. Don't run around with comedians, my son. They will never thank you and that will never allow you to be happy! For God's sake, don't do business with actors! It seems to me more honorable to be the doorknob on a bad house, than to be a German play write! When the Neuberin's troupe in Leipzig disbanded, Lessing was in financial trouble. He had carelessly bailed some of the actors out of their debts and when the troupe disbanded, they abandoned him. He could not hope for help from his family at the Kamenzer parsonage - what could he do? Lessing saw no way out of his financial chaos other than a hasty departure from town; he took off in the summer of 1748. As he was headed through Wittenberg on his way to Berlin, he got sick and decided to spend the winter in Wittenberg; he had his fathers approval. On August 13, 1748 he enrolled as a medicine student at the university in Wittenberg. He lived at the "Lessinghaus (Lessing house)" on the Holzmarkt; you will find a commemorative plaque on this building. From his correspondences during this time we know that he was not well off. He missed the stage, and on top of that, he felt he had outgrown the lecture halls of the alma mater. Lessing, a critical spirit, was anything but the stereotypical scholar; his intelectual interests did not tolerate the restricted frame of the university. While in Wittenberg, Lessing learned to love books; they became his whole world. His friends could tell you that "Gotthold, in his inner self, was a scholarly bookworm". He compensated for what failed him physically with the riches in the Wittenberg library.
