Extractions: Author's notes: Bob Cotner told me that a Caxtonian asked whether I would care to write an essay about Arsene Lupin and its creator, Maurice Leblanc (1864-1941). My own comment was Why not? I understand that there are a number of club members who are fans of Sherlock Holmes, a character Lupin competed with. T here are some 60 Arsene Lupin titles in French, written by Maurice Leblanc over more than a quarter century. There are also comic strips, several plays, motion pictures, and TV series featuring the hero, including a 1932 motion picture starring John Barrymore. Sherlock Holmes had to be resurrected by Conan Doyle by popular demand after he had killed him off because Doyle had grown tired of writing about him. The same thing happened to Arsene Lupin, who also survived his original author, with additional five Arsene Lupin books published between 1973 and 1979 by the noted mystery story writing team of Boileau-Narcejac. (They are the authors of the novels on which the classic movie thrillers, Diabolique (1952) and Hitchcocks Vertigo (1958), are based).

Extractions: Maurice was brought to England by the Normans (as Meurisse ) and was fairy popular during the Middle Ages, although not among the nobility. Maurice , usually spelled Morris , gave rise to several surnames. It slowly died, and was fairly rare by the 17th century. Maurice is generally thought of as a purely French name in the English-speaking world, but this is probably due to the popularity of French singer/actor Maurice Chevalier.

But above and beyond there's still one name left over

Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's
