Extractions: LANDSAT MSS Mosaicking Although remote sensing satellite imagery has been widely available for over 20 years, the steps toward operational use of it have been slow. In the case of preprocessing, operational systems still address only scene-based correction issues. Geometric rectification has matured to the state where sophisticated spacecraft modelling and control point acquisition techniques are sufficient to ensure routine, sub-pixel correction accuracy for imagery from high resolution sensors such as those carried on the LANDSAT and SPOT platforms. In the case of scene radiometry, sensor-related corrections are routine; however, atmospheric correction is still viewed as a complex post-processing step. Current applications requirements, particularly in the area of environment monitoring, necessitate an expansion of our operational preprocessing systems. Monitoring in many instances requires integrated data sets of large geographic coverage which in turn can span many conventional remote sensing scenes. Preprocessing must therefore be broadened to encompass multi-scene fusion issues. In the case of imagery from the

Using Landsat and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data, the Team produced false color maps showing a variety measurements of interest to environmental scientists. For example, the Team can show how much green vegetation grew in a given area; and soon it may be able to tell how much standing water in lakes came from melted snow. "We wanted to characterize the seasonal dynamics of vegetation over large areas of the Arctic during the short growing season of arctic tundra vegetation on Alaska's North Slope," said Douglas Stow, professor at San Diego State University.

Obtaining Landsat Images The US Government does distribute certain high resolution LandsatMSS satellite images as part of the Landsat Pathfinder Program. http://members.aol.com/landsatcd/MOREHTML/landsat.html
Extractions: Obtaining Landsat Images INTRODUCTION One of the best known series of earth observation satellites is Landsat. First launched as the Earth Resource Technology Satellite in July 1972, it was later renamed Landsat 1. This satellite was followed by Landsat 2 through 5. Landsat 6 never reached orbit after launch in 1993. Landsat-7 began operations in 1999 and is now producing great imagery of our planet.. Landsat 7 is expected to have a 5 year mission life. The satellite orbits at an altitude of approximately 438 miles. It repeats its coverage of the earth every 16 days. The on-board sensors capture an image area of about 115 miles x 115 miles. Most of the Landast imagery from the past ten years were from satellites 4 and 5. Two types of image data from these satellites are available: MultiSpectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM). Landsat 7 uses a new Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). One of its new features is a panchromatic band (Band 8) with 15 meter resolution. Low cost sample datasets from Landsat 7 are available from the U.S.G.S. EROS Data Center

PROJECT/CAMPAIGN GLCTS contain data acquired under the terms of the US Government and its Gayla, Feistner,Kelly, and Larson, Charles, in press, Landsat Pathfinder processing support http://eosims.cr.usgs.gov:5725/CAMPAIGN_DOCS/glcts_proj_camp.html
Extractions: The Global Land Cover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is a component of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Landsat Pathfinder Program. Pathfinder projects focus on the application of existing remote sensing data collections to issues of global change and focus on the exploration of data management issues, which will be encountered in the Earth Observing System Data and Information system (EOSDIS) environment. The targeted user community includes researchers developing regional- and global-scale land cover assessments, researchers developing improved algorithms for land surface parameterization, and field scientists at the test sites exploring the uses of remote sensing. Global Land Cover Test Sites, GLCTS The GLCTS project is an effort to develop a multitemporal satellite data base for a suite of globally distributed test sites to support research on land cover characterization and to support the testing and validation of improved algorithms for the Earth Observing System (EOS). The selected test sites represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground, have ongoing field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community (McGwire and Mah, 1996).
