Extractions: Henry Kendall (1839-1882) Henry Kendall was born in 1839 near Milton on the NSW coast. He lived in the coastal regions of Illawarra in the south of NSW and Clarence River in the north before spending two years aboard a whaling vessel. He returned to live in Sydney and published his first volume of poetry, Poems and Songs in 1862. He moved to Melbourne in 1868 after his marriage and published his second volume, Leaves from Australian Forests in 1869. His lack of success, however, along with the death of his daughter Araluen drove him to alcohol and he was to spend various periods in a Sydney asylum for his addiction. He was finally cured, reunited with his wife and achieved some level of success with his final volume of poetry, Songs from the Mountains , in 1880. He died in 1882. P oetry C ollections
Henry Clarence Kendall Henry Clarence Kendall (18391882). Prefatory Sonnets (from Leaves from Australian Forests) I and II http://www.sonnets.org/kendall.htm
Extractions: Henry Clarence Kendall (1839-1882) I purposed once to take my pen and write, Not songs, like some, tormented and awry With passion, but a cunning harmony Of words and music caught from glen and height, And lucid colours born of woodland light And shining places where the sea-streams lie. But this was when the heat of youth glowed white, And since I've put the faded purpose by. I have no faultless fruits to offer you Who read this book; but certain syllables Herein are borrowed from unfooted dells And secret hollows dear to noontide dew; And these at least, though far between and few, May catch the sense like subtle forest spells. So take these kindly, even though there be Some notes that unto jother lyres belong, Stray echoes from the elder sons of song; And think how from its neighbouring native sea The pensive shell doth borrow melody. I would not do the lordly masters wrong By filching fair words from the shining throng Whose music haunts me, as the wind a tree.

Extractions: Louis Lavater, in The Sonnet in Australasia (1956) mentions that Arthur A. Adams, literary editor of the Sydney Bulletin once referred to the sonnet as "a verse form in which Australians had shown themselves singularly adept." Still, one might have hoped for more of a glimpse of the outback, or at least the coast, but a cultural homesickness overwhelms many of the early sonnets. To the right is a short chronological listing of authors; I hope to be adding some more soon. Return to Sonnet Central. Charles Harpur Henry Parkes Henry Clarence Kendall ... William Baylebridge
