Preface The composition of this booklet was originally started because the Com- puter Science department at Widener University was in desperate need of documentation describing the capabilities of this "great new Internet link" we obtained. It's since grown into an effort to acquaint the reader with much of what's currently available over the Internet. Aimed at the novice user, it attempts to remain operating system "neutral"_little information herein is specific to Unix, VMS, or any other environment. This booklet will, hopefully, be usable by nearly anyone.

Rauch-Bank W ander into just about any restaurant, order a cup of coffee and eavesdrop on your neighbors, and you're likely to hear at least one of these words pop up in the conversation: the "Web," the "Internet," or "online." All three might even be used in the same sentence, which could go something like this: "Hey, last night I went online and accessed the Internet through the Web, and guess what I found..." The rest of the conversation is likely to be interspersed with a handful of the hundreds of words that are a part of the Internet lingo. And, as the two individuals go their separate ways, instead of shouting the cliché, "See ya later. I'll call you," to each other, they may instead part with, "See ya later. I'll e-mail you." You can be a prolific computer user and still not have a clue about what the Internet is all about. I've been using both Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers for nearly a decade, and though I'm no computer expert, I'm quite comfortable behind a monitor. Even so, I found the whole concept of the Internet quite overwhelming. In January 1994, I added "Learn how to access and use the Internet" to my list of New Year's Resolutions. I finally took the first step this past June, when I subscribed to America Online. There are a variety of online services available, like Prodigy and CompuServe, which offer a gateway to the Internet. Since then, I've grown quite fond of being online. I've sent electronic mail (e-mail), discussed politics in one of the service's "chat rooms" even pulled up an article on REIT investing that I used as background for last month's Beginner's Corner column, and a gourmet recipe for serving cornish hens from the New York Times Sunday

Even if we feel that graphic is a significant improvement over plain-text information systems, we don't want this to become a filter for information availability. For this reason the whole web site was designed in such a way that graphics and plain text were separated in different HTML files to remove the need of duplicating the site contents for both styles.
