Box and folder numbers followed by a number in parenthesis indicate the number of items by (or to) that person. The absence of a parenthetical notation indicates there is just one item. So in the example there are thirty-five items from Shaw and one other letter included with these in box 38, folder 10; a letter from Jones filed with letters from Jules Magny in box 40, folder 5; and 2 letters from Jones in Box 50, folder 7. Extractions: Shelfmarks: Dep. c. 831-53, d. 840, e. 393 Papers of the Lewis family, 19th-20th cent., mainly letters to: Elizabeth, Lady Lewis (1844-1931), with a few to her husband Sir George Lewis, 1st Bart. (1833-1911); to one of their daughters, Katherine Elizabeth Lewis (d. 1961), with a few to their son Sir George Lewis, 2nd Bart. (1868-1927); and to their grand-daughter Elizabeth Lewis, later Wansbrough (d. 1995). Many of the letters are undated; some can be dated from the postmark on the envelope, but several letters were kept in the wrong envelopes; most of Paderewski's and Whistler's letters had become separated from their envelopes. Written, at least latterly, and edited, with an eye to publication as his own memorial, the diary was much admired on its first appearance and with its mingled pride and self-disgust it remains a unique self-portrait of an interesting, if ultimately unsympathetic, man. The Journal of a Disappointed Man London, Chatto and Windus, 1919. This volume ends with the false announcement of the diarist's death. Many times reprinted.
