Site map Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield , Staffordshire, the son of a bookseller whose shop was in the Market Square. When he was five years old he went for English lessons at Dame Oliver's School, Dam Street. After attending the Grammar Schools in Lichfield and Stourbridge he went on to Pembroke College, Oxford. Although a bright student, he suffered from mental stress, not helped by his poverty at this time and his poor eyesight and he left after just over a year. He worked as a teacher in Market Bosworth before moving to Birmingham , where he lived for three years. Here he met Elizabeth Porter, whom he was later to marry. She was twenty years older than Samuel, had already raised a family by a previous marriage and was financially secure. He wrote for the Birmingham Journal and completed his first published book, A voyage to Abyssinia (1735), a translation from a French book of travels. Following their marriage Samuel and Elizabeth set up a school at Edial , near Lichfield but this was not a success. One of Samuel's pupils was David Garrick and together they went to London in 1737, Johnson to write for

    Extractions: Samuel Johnson was born into one England, an agricultural nation which was emerging from a long and complex period of enormously disruptive internal political and religious strife during which its very existence was often threatened by internecine rivalries and by rival European powers. After a long life he died in another England, one which was much more powerful, much more complex, and one in which the technological advances which would culminate in the "INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION" were increasingly important. What follows is a brief synopsis of important historical events which affected Johnson's life, and significant events in economic history which reflect the changing technological environment in the England of his day. When Johnson was born, in 1709, Queen Anne, the High-Church Anglican who was the last member of the House of Stuart to rule England, (she differed from the illustrious, licentious, and notorious relatives who had preceded her on the throne in that she seems to have been a rather pious, prosaic, and boring person) was in the seventh year of her reign: she would die in 1714, but all his life Johnson remembered that at the age of two he had been taken to see her, in hopes that her touch would cure him of the numerous physical ailments which plagued him, and all his life, (understandably enough, given his Tory tendencies) he retained a certain sentimental fondness for the ill-fated Stuart dynasty.

Publisher Robert Dodsley suggested to Johnson that a dictionary of the English language might be a successful venture and proposed the Earl of Chesterfield as a patron. Johnson addressed this thirtyfour page pamphlet to the Earl, who did little to support the effort. Johnson's query, "Is not a patron, my lord, one who looks with unconcern upon a man struggling for life in the water, and when he has reached ground encumbers him with help?" recalls the dependency of authors on patronage throughout the eighteenth century. This system only began to change with the rise of the periodical press that led to a profession of authorship, a transition in which Johnson was a major figure. Johnson embarked on his Plan alone, although what he had projected to be the work of three years required eight, and the Dictionary only appeared in 1755.

Aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten verließ er ohne Abschluß die Universität und erlitt den ersten von zwei Nervenzusammenbrüchen. Während dieser Zeit der Niedergeschlagenheit bildete sich durch die Lektüre frommer Literatur eine tiefe Religiosität heraus.
