Sketch of a Roman bas relief (Augustan) forms head-piece for Poodle Lit. 101 ; probably a stele (Roman grave stone) or ashes box. Taken from Der Deutsche Pudel (Munich: German Poodle Clubs, 1907), p. 4, where it is credited to Richard Strebel, Der Deutschen hunde... (Munich, 1905); in the reprint of Strebel (1986 reprint of 1904/5 edition), the image appears in vol. 1, p. 19. This image belongs in "noted" below; however slotted here with the Greek pot in order to connect these with the following references: "Earliest known mention of the dog [Irish Water Spaniel]in fact, of the word "spaniel"is in the Irish Laws of 17 A.D., by which water spaniels were given as tribute to the king" (Jeff Griffen, The Hunting Dogs of America (NY: Doubleday, 1964), p. 144); P. Howard Price, The Miniature Poodle Book "The Hadrian [Hadrian was Roman emperor, 117-38] billon tetradrachem of Alexandria's Serapis reverse has Kerberos at his feet and Kerberos, on this particular coin, looks like a Poodle." (Forwarded by JB, 16 July '97.) Serapis was a composite god "of the underworld formed by the merging of Hap (Apis), the sacred bull, with Osiris as Bull of the Underworld. Established at Alexandria and at Memphis for the Greeks and the Egyptians." (Marjorie Leach, Guide to the Gods (Santa Barbara, Denver, Oxford: ABC-CLIO, 1992), p. 264. "In the Near East and the Grecian Islands he is a protector of navigation, as well as a god of healing and of fecundity," ibid., p. 394. Kerberos was the three-headed, snake-tailed, maned canine guardian of the underworld whose removal was the 12th Labour of Hercules (after displaying his fierce prize, Hercules returned the dog). The honey-cake which the ancient Greeks put with the corpse was intended to quiet Kerberos (alt. sp.: Cerberus). This tetradrachem is proof that he had lost a couple of heads, his snake, and was well-socialized in the first century AD in civilized Alexandria. See: Richard J. Plant

Henry Wodehouse. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a first in classics in 1847. He succeeded his grandfather as 3rd Baron Wodehouse in 1846. The papers form an invaluable record of Kimberley's career in public life and of the machinery of government in the second half of the nineteenth century. They remained in private hands, virtually undisturbed, until their sale in 1991. Many came to the Library in their original bundles with contemporary labels, and wherever possible this order has been preserved. The outline arrangement of the papers is as follows: first, five volumes of political diaries covering the period 1862-1902 (MSS. Eng. e. 2790-4), and a single journal of events during the Gladstone ministry, 1868-74 (MS. Eng. c. 3993), which was edited by Ethel Drus and published in the
