    Extractions: Heinrich Heine. Heine was born on December 13, 1797, in Düsseldorf, of Jewish parents. He attended schools in Düsseldorf until 1815. While staying with his uncle Salomon Heine, a Hamburg banker, Heine fell in love with his cousin Amalie, but this remained unrequited. This early experience may have been the source for the motifs of yearning, disappointment, and Romantic irony in his poetry though he rejected outright Romanticism. In 1819 he began to study law, first in Bonn, and then at the University of Göttingen. Discontented with the pedantic atmosphere of Göttingen, he moved to Berlin in 1821. There he came into contact with the German philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, who profoundly influenced his philosophic outlook. Early Poetry and Prose Heine remained in Berlin until 1823, writing poetry. In 1822 his first volume of verse, Gedichte (trans. 1884), was published; it attracted attention because of the delicacy and lyrical beauty of the poems. From 1824 to 1825 he returned to the study of law. Because the profession of law was prohibited to Jews in Germany at that time, Heine became a Christian in 1825 in order to obtain a law degree; although he qualified, he never actually practised law. In 1826 Die Harzreise (trans. 1887), a prose account of a trip he had taken to the Harz Mountains, was published. This work, with its wit and grace of style, won success immediately and established Heine's literary reputation. In 1827 his Das Buch der Lieder (trans. 1846) was published. In Lieder settings by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert and others, they have become the lyric poems for which he is best known.

Unsuccessful in law and business, Heine moved to France and became a writer. He married Eugenie Mirat in 1841. Heine often writes traditional ballad poems. A ballad is a four-line stanza that traditionally alternates lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter. Heine's poems that use the ballad stanza include: "A Spruce is Standing Lonely"; "A Young Man Loves a Maiden"; "Loreley"; "My Beauty, My Love, You Have Bound Me"; "The Asra"; "How Slowly Time, the Loathsome Snail"; and, "The Migratory Rats."     Extractions: by Roswitha Joshi Heinrich Heine was born in 1797 and can best be understood in the context of his time. It was a time when the French Revolution, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" boldly proclaiming on its banner, swept Europe and tore its feudal social fabric to shreds. When its fiercest protagonist, Napoleon Bonaparte, succumbed to the lures of imperial splendour to become Emperor Napoleon I, he stitched these shreds together again - not, however, by unifying the minds of the people to fight for those human rights but by conquering their countries. Wars of liberation followed. Napoleon was defeated, but the people found themselves in bondage again, though of a different type. Reactionary political forces had assumed power and found their natural ally in the upper middle classes, i.e. investors and entrepreneurs of the burgeoning industries, who strongly felt the need to protect their interest against the now awakened fourth estate, the workers. Their demand for a new social order accompanied the process of industrialization. The emergence of technical innovations, discoveries, new theories, faster modes of traffic led to a change of the Weltbild as such.

Er führt ein unstetes Wanderleben (Hamburg, Lüneburg, London, München, Italien, Berlin) in dem ständigen Bemühen, sich eine unabhängige Existenz als Schriftsteller und Journalist zu schaffen. Buch der Lieder <, eine Art Gesamtausgabe seiner bisher veröffentlichten Gedichte; sie entsprang dem jugendlichen Ehrgeiz Heines, dass seine Gedichte "so populär werden wie die Bürgerschen, Goetheschen, Uhlandschen"(1826). Der Publikumserfolg war zuerst gering: 2000 Exemplare in 10 Jahren! Das bürgerliche Publikum konnte mit der Mischung aus Romantik und Frivolität nichts anfangen. Das ironisch-leichte Spiel mit romantischen Sentiments und lyrischen Formen behagte ihm nicht, man vermisste die Ernsthaftigtkeit und echte Tiefe des Gefühls. Heines Verleger Campe schreibt ihm 1835: "Wenn Sie Uhlands Gedichte betrachten und das Renomé, worin er sich befindet, religiös und mittelalterlich, so ist klar, warum er so viele Leser findet. SIE behandeln Liebe und Sich selbst, und wieder Sich selbst, das sehen die Leute als stinkigen Egoismus an (...) der Egoismus wird Ihnen ununterbrochen zur Last gelegt, dann, dass Sie der Üppigkeit das Wort reden. Bedarf es noch mehr Gründe, um zu beweisen, warum Uhlands Gedichte populärer sind. Uhlands Gedichte kauft jeder um ein Geschenk an eine Dame, zum Geburtstag und sonstigen Zwecken zu machen. IHR Buch geht nach den Universitäten an junge Männer und dergleichen - die kein Geld haben."
